Wow, the weeks are certainly flying past. Today marks the end of the third week of Spring 2, and what a week it has been! This week has been an exciting and enriching time at Rockliffe Manor as we celebrated British Science Week! Children across Nursery to Year 6 have been engaged in a range of activities that have deepened their understanding of scientific inquiry.
On Thursday, we welcomed Reception families into school for Reception’s first-ever sharing assembly. The children wowed us all with their amazing knowledge of bees, speaking clearly and confidently as they shared fascinating facts about how these incredible insects help our planet. For our youngest children, standing up in front of a large audience is a monumental milestone. We were incredibly impressed by their bravery and how many of them remembered their lines entirely independently! This experience has been a wonderful way to build their self-esteem and public speaking skills, setting a fantastic foundation for their future assemblies. A huge thank you to all the parents and carers who came along to cheer them on—your presence made their big debut feel truly special.
Our classrooms from Reception through Year 6 were buzzing this afternoon as families joined us to celebrate Science Week. It was wonderful to watch the children present their experiments and findings with such poise and enthusiasm. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who attended; your support truly fuels their desire to learn. Science has become a standout favorite here at Rockliffe Manor, and seeing the students take such pride in their discoveries is a joy. By exploring these big ideas, they aren’t just learning facts—they are building the curiosity and creativity they’ll need for the future.
Looking ahead to next week, our Year 5 children are eagerly anticipating their upcoming school journey—an exciting opportunity for adventure, learning, and personal growth! For many of our students, this will be their first significant experience staying away from home for an extended period. While this is a big step, it is also a wonderful milestone. These few days away will allow them to build independence, strengthen friendships, and discover a sense of resilience they didn't know they had. We are so proud of their bravery and can't wait to see them embrace every challenge and new experience with a smile!
But for now, wishing you all a wonderful weekend! We look forward to seeing you all back on Monday
With very best wishes, Mrs Cook and the Rockliffe Manor team.
Learning this week
Let’s take a look at some of the learning that has happened this week …
Nursery dived head-first into British Science Week, investigating the physics of floating and sinking. After testing whether apples could stay afloat, the children designed their own boats. In the water area, Eric and Art showed great creativity by using washing-up liquid and plastic objects to build "erupting volcanoes" with bubbly lava!
Reception blew us away with their very first sharing assembly. They projected their voices brilliantly to share facts about bees—all while remembering their lines independently! The excitement continued with a special visit from the ducklings; Willow noted how smooth they felt to the touch. The children have also been busy scientists, asking deep questions about why certain objects float while others sink.
Year 1 has been gripped by scientific enquiry. Mase particularly enjoyed sorting magnetic and non-magnetic objects after being stumped by Miss Gallagher’s "magic" paperclip trick! The week ended on a high with a special cinema night. Primrose declared it the "best day ever" as the children clutched their tickets to watch Up!
Year 2 focused their scientific minds on our feathered friends, investigating why ducks stay dry and why bird beaks vary in shape. They are eager to show off their hands-on experiments at today's showcase! Meanwhile, in English, there was a collective sigh of relief as they finished Starbird; the class was delighted to see the Moonking finally do the right thing.
Year 3 took on the vital topic of climate change this week. The children have been incredibly enthusiastic while constructing their own biomes to represent different ecosystems. In the world of maths, they’ve been working hard to master the complexities of comparing and ordering non-unit fractions.
Year 4 enjoyed a double-dose of culture with two fantastic trips. At the National Gallery, they analyzed the use of light and detail in world-famous paintings. They also spent time at the local library, hunting for new favorite reads and further developing their genuine love for storytelling.
Year 5 tackled the global issue of clean water. They acted as environmental engineers, designing filtration systems using layers of sand, gravel, and charcoal. The children were genuinely astonished to see their murky water turn clear through the power of their own handmade filters!
Year 6 have been mastering the art of coordinates. The pupils showed great confidence in navigating the x and y axes to plot points on a grid. They’ve also been applying this knowledge to geometry, successfully identifying the coordinates of vertices for various polygons.
