And just like that, another half term has flown by! It's been a whirlwind of learning, laughter, and growth, and we're incredibly proud of how well our children have adapted to the new academic year. Watching them thrive in their classrooms and forge new friendships has been truly heartwarming. Get ready to be amazed by their incredible work! Soon, their stunning writing pieces and captivating artwork will adorn our school walls and be showcased on our Twitter page, @RockliffeManor. Keep an eye out for these inspiring creations!
It was great to welcome families during our first Parents evening this year. A heartfelt thank you to all the parents and carers who were able to attend; your involvement and commitment isis vital in supporting your child's growth and development. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to discuss your child's achievements and next steps, and we appreciate the time you took to engage in these important conversations. Your partnership is key to helping our children thrive. For those families who were unable to attend, please make contact with your child’s class teacher; we aim to meet with all parents before the end of the half term.
On Monday, we kicked off the week with an assembly talking about attendance, focusing on why coming to school every day is so important. We discussed the many benefits, such as seeing friends, joining in fun activities, and not missing out on learning important things. We also highlighted that good attendance helps children do better in tests and exams, and prepares them for future work life. The government target is for children to have at least 95% attendance, and we noted that missing just 15 minutes a day due to lateness can equal two weeks of absence over the year. The students looked at common reasons for missing school and discussed positive ways they can help improve their attendance, like getting ready the night before, going to bed on time, and keeping healthy. We want to thank you for your continued commitment in supporting your child's attendance.
On Thursday we were delighted to announce our Junior Leadership Team (JLT) for this academic year. The atmosphere during the assembly filled the hall with excitement and support. It was wonderful to see the genuine happiness and encouragement the children extended to their peers who were selected. These will not be the only leadership roles for the children at Rockliffe Manor as we believe that instilling leadership qualities in our young learners is crucial for their personal growth and development. It teaches them responsibility, confidence, and the ability to collaborate effectively with others. Our JLT members are sure to exemplify these qualities as they embark on their leadership roles, and we look forward to their contributions to our school.
While we say goodbye to this half term, we will soon say hello to our next one which is a very exciting one over the winter period. Our usual events such as our winter fair, winter discos, nativity and our christmas concert will all be on offer and we are very excited to share these upcoming dates with you soon.
For the first two weeks of Autumn 2 the children will be participating in our Food Fortnight, where they will be trying out their cooking skills to create a meal dedicated to one particular country. The children will plan recipes, create advertisements for their dishes and create their meals ready to be showcased in our annual World Cafe. This is going to take place on Monday 17th November. More details will be shared in an individual letter, we can’t wait to see our community represented by a variety of dishes.
We hope you all have a wonderful half term break and we very much look forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday 3rd November.
With very best wishes, Mrs Cook and the Rockliffe Manor team
Learning this week
Let’s take a look at some of the learning this week …
Our Nursery children have been busy exploring their five senses this week. They loved getting messy with some fun Halloween-themed activities, including concocting "magic potions and spells" in the malleable area. They also worked on their mark-making skills by drawing "crazy legs" on spiders! We are incredibly proud to announce that Nursery won the Values Trophy this week! They have had an amazing term settling in and making new friends, and their reward celebration is today—well done, everyone!
It was an exciting end to the week for Reception as they took their first trip to the library! The children were thrilled to choose and take out their own books and enjoyed a special story read by the librarian. In Literacy, they explored their emotions using the story The Colour Monster. They had great discussions about different feelings and shared what each emotion "looked like" to them, culminating in some fantastic art where they created their own colour monsters.
Year 1 has had a fantastic first half-term! As they prepare for a break, they have been reflecting on all their learning and celebrating the positive praise they’ve received from staff. This week, they showed wonderful resilience and maturity during the Junior Leadership Team (JLT) selection assembly. They supported their friends who were chosen and showed great understanding and appreciation for everyone who simply tried out for the role.
The children in Year 2 loved publishing their final outcomes in English this week! Their task was to write a powerful letter of encouragement to Izzy from Grandpa. We are so proud of their determination and concentration as they "uplevelled" their language, incorporating advanced features like 'power of three,' expanded noun phrases, and 'show, not tell' techniques. This was their first major publishing of the year, and they should be extremely proud!
Year 3 also enjoyed publishing their final creative outcomes in English. In Art, the children have been busy making stunning stained backgrounds to support their final pieces. In Science, they used a "think and link" activity to describe how fossils are formed. We are delighted to see the children beaming with pride over their hard work this week!
Year 4 had a great week publishing their English outcomes. One pupil shared how much he enjoyed the activity, especially "putting himself in Odysseus’s shoes" for the writing. It was wonderful hearing the children discuss profound ideas about individuality; one child explained that everyone is unique and that the world wouldn't be fun if everyone was the same—a truly thoughtful perspective! They also loved a creative and "special" Art session this week.
Year 5 absolutely loved publishing biographies this week, taking such great pride in their English outcomes that some even offered to stay in at playtime to finish their work! In Science, the children learned about water resistance and how streamlined shapes are more effective at reducing its effect. They are becoming increasingly confident at articulating their explanations for these key scientific concepts.
Our Year 6 mathematicians have been working hard on adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators. It was fantastic to see the children collaborating together, using whiteboards to show their process for finding a common denominator and checking each other's understanding. Their ability to explain the process clearly shows their excellent progress this term
