Happy Friday, everyone! Rockliffe Manor has been buzzing with activity this week, reflecting the fantastic learning and community spirit we value so highly.
In today’s assembly, children from Year 1 - Year 6 shared a poem they have been practising in our first ever Poetry Slam! It was a brilliant success, filled with confidence and fantastic expression from every participant. Exposing our children to a variety of text types, especially poetry, is crucial for developing their vocabulary, creativity, and deeper understanding of how language works. We hope this will continue to be a tradition for us here at Rockliffe Manor, and we look forward to seeing this exciting event grow and develop each year.
On Wednesday, we hosted our first Reading Morning of this academic year, and it was fantastic to welcome so many parents into the classrooms. Seeing our children share their favourite books and reading strategies with their families truly reinforced the importance of the home-school partnership in fostering a love of reading. Thank you to everyone who joined us!
It’s been another packed week of educational visits that have brought lessons to life: Year 2 had a fantastic trip to the Science Museum. The children explored the exhibit “The Making of the Modern World,” which linked perfectly to their English learning inspired by Izzy Gizmo. The children were fascinated by the inventions on display and made wonderful connections to their classroom work. They represented our school beautifully, showing our values of responsibility and respect throughout the day.
Year 1 went to the library, helping to spark a lifetime love of reading and showing them how to use this invaluable community resource. Whilst there they Year 1 were very lucky to have an author workshop on their library visit this week to celebrate black history month. The children were able to listen to the author reading her book, asked questions and shared which part was their favourite before they completed a range of activities linked to the book such as reading positive affirmations, writing kind words or drawing pictures to represent kindness and word searches.
And Reception children enjoyed their very first class trip from Rockliffe Manor to the local Rockliffe Gardens! They explored the natural surroundings, continued to build their new relationships, and learned about the changes in the season. After a successful nature hunt, they used the collected pine cones, acorns, and conkers to create brilliant patterns in class the next day!
Just a reminder that Parents' Evening is taking place next week. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher, celebrate their progress, and discuss the next steps in their learning journey. If you need any help at all with booking your slot, please do not hesitate to contact the school office, where Kate and Christine will happily help you.
And finally, before we wish you well. We want to take this opportunity to reiterate the importance of excellent attendance at school. Every single day in school is a building block for your child’s knowledge and confidence. Please help us by ensuring your child is here on time, every day, ready to learn and take part in all the exciting activities we have planned.
We hope you all have a lovely weekend! Just a quick reminder that next week is our final week of term, and this year, we'll be enjoying a two-week half-term break afterward. We can't wait to see you all on Monday!
With very best wishes,
Mrs Cook and the Rockliffe Manor team
Learning this week
Let’s take a look at some of the learning this week …
It has been a truly impressive week across the whole school, showcasing brilliant learning and enthusiasm in every year group:
Nursery have had great fun exploring their 5 senses this week! They conducted touch, smell, and their favourite—tasting—tests. We had some wonderful reactions, with Rayna declaring the chilli crisps were "really spicy... I like them!" Everyone showed fantastic listening skills and patience while waiting for their turn.
Reception have been exploring patterns in their Maths learning, discovering them in nature and objects all around them. Raina noticed, "I can see a pattern on the tiger, the stripes are like a pattern," while William commented on the "beautiful pattern" on the leopard's spots. They were then able to apply this skill on their first trip to Rockliffe Gardens, using the pine cones, acorns, and conkers they collected to create their own patterns back in the classroom!
In Year 1 this week, the children have been working hard in their English lessons. They wrote their own guides to being a good friend, starting by thinking about what qualities make a good friend and how they can show kindness, just like the characters did in Beegu. The children then connected their ideas using conjunctions to form complete sentences. It was wonderful to see the growth mindset they brought to their learning, and how much kindness Year 1 displayed!
In Year 2 the children had a fantastic history lesson looking at how World War 1 impacted the Suffragette movement. The children were so interested to find out how when the war started, the jobs that were usually done by men were then left empty. To support the country women were asked to step in and they showed society how they can do the same as men. The children found it particularly interesting to note that the world war ended the same year as women earning the right to vote.
Year 3 children have been successfully building their skills in addition and subtraction, learning to exchange and regroup with growing confidence. In English, they have focused on beautiful handwriting and presentation, publishing their writing with pride, using time adverbials to add detail and flow to their narratives
Year 4 have shown their passion for descriptive writing when creating a sequel based on Odysseus. Henry described the storm in the scene as ‘spine-chilling’ and Kamila described the feeling of hope after defeating the beast. They’ve also had great fun decorating their Greek vases and learning more about Grayson Perry.
Year 5 this week has been learning about sustainability and the children have learnt that countries around the world have made 17 promises to make their practices more sustainable. They used their knowledge of Awra Amba and their sustainable practices to compare and contrast them to the UK. In addition, the children have been shown great commitment in improving their handwriting and presentation across all subjects.
Year 6 have been planning their final outcomes in English. The children have reflected on everything they have learned in Gorilla Dawn and are using their grammar skills, literary devices to create effective sentences ready for their final write. It was lovely to see children in Year 6 thinking hard about their maths this week. They were so focused and engaged.
