Message from Mrs Cook

Another week has flown by here at Rockliffe Manor and what a great week it has been! Despite the rain, the spirits of all of our children have remained high as they have got stuck in, in all of their new topics.

There are lots of exciting things coming up across this half term. The Mother's Day sale promises to be a heartwarming event, filled with thoughtful gifts and tokens of appreciation for the amazing mothers in our community. With a range of carefully curated items, it's the perfect opportunity to show our gratitude and celebrate the incredible women in our lives. Thank you to the Friends of Rockliffe Team for all of your hard work in getting this arranged. More information is shared on the Friends of Rockliffe letter, which has been sent out today.

Parents Evening is quickly approaching, and we're pleased to announce that from 9am on Monday 4th March parents can book their slots with their child's teachers. This ensures that every family has the opportunity to discuss their child's progress and address any concerns they may have. We understand that sometimes unexpected circumstances arise, and if families are unable to attend, we kindly ask them to rearrange their appointment directly with their child's teacher. Open communication between home and school is essential for the success of our students, and we want to accommodate every family's needs to ensure a productive and insightful Parents Evening for all.

Meanwhile, anticipation is building for our amazing Book Week activities coming up next week! Miss Lambert has been busy preparing and organising lots of exciting things for our children to do to celebrate all things books! We are excited to announce that we will be bringing back ‘Dad’s Breakfast’ on Tuesday 5th March, after an amazing turnout in previous years it will be taking place in the hall on this day from 8am-8.40am. This is an opportunity for dads, grandads, brothers and uncles to have a delicious breakfast and share a book with their children!  It has been shown that male role models are very important when it comes to encouraging reading and we look forward to seeing many of you then. On Wednesday we are excited to be inviting the author Jamie Crawford. Jamie is an excellent storyteller who has been telling stories with wit and flair for over 25 years. In his lively, interactive performances, Jamie brings traditional tales to life for people of all ages with each being new, exciting and unique. We are so excited to welcome him to our school on this day where he will be sharing his stories with all the children in exciting sessions throughout the day. And last but not least, the most exciting part of the Book Week jubilation, on Thursday 7th March we will be inviting all children (and staff!) to dress up as their favourite book character. It would be great if children could also bring a book that their character features in, to share with their class.

Just a note to say, there have been lots of parents asking about the Lollipop person vacancy, since our wonderful Pete retired, we have been communicating with Greenwich about this, at the present time we have been told that Greenwich are monitoring the foot traffic at the spot that Pete covered and will then consider whether this position needs to be filled, we will continue to express our concern regarding the lack of this service and update you when we have more information.

With that said, we hope you are just as excited as we are for all of the fantastic things that are coming ahead! We look forward to seeing everyone back to school on Monday and hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

With very best wishes, Mrs Cook and the Rockliffe Manor team

Learning this week

Let’s take a look at the learning this week…

Nursery this week loved retelling the traditional tale ‘Three Little Pigs’ using their incredible acting skills. The children began the week exploring a variety of materials to create masks, which they used as props to act out the story. The children also impressed the adults in their ability to recall and sequence events they learnt from the story. Eva enjoyed playing the role of the Big Bad Wolf, telling Mr Haricksign “I’m going to huff and puff and blow you down”.

Children in Reception this week have become phonics detectives during our phonics session, searching for and identifying the digraphs and trigraphs in words. The children have enjoyed this mission so much they have taken it upon themselves to spot and identify all the digraphs and trigraphs that can be found in our classroom. Ayomide said “I have found over a hundred and there's still more to find, I think I’m going to need some help”.

Year 1 are really enjoying their English learning journey. This week, the children have been using descriptive language to describe characters. The children have also looked at similarities and differences between the characters. The movie ‘UP’ is engaging the children’s interests and they are eager to find out more about what happens next in the story.

Year 2 has also been immersed in their core text Starbird. The children have been making connections between characters. In maths, the children have started their unit of multiplication and division and they are using their prior knowledge of money to skip count in groups of 2, 5 and 10. Also this week, Year 2 enjoyed their library visit where the children got to choose a book they love and it’s nice for children to enthusiastically read a range of literature.

In Year 3, the children have had a brilliant week! The children had a great music lesson which showcased some amazing vocals in the class. The class have also really enjoyed getting to know their core text and have enjoyed looking at features of a newspaper in their lessons. The class looked at headlines and taglines and practised linking taglines to a headline.

Year 4 has been busy this week! The class come to the end of their maths journey on length and perimeter and put their skills to the test by answering challenge questions as a group. In English, the children were introduced to their final outcome, a travel brochure. The children were very curious to find out about travel agents and did not necessarily believe Miss Roper at first! The class then researched key facts about the Himalayas under headings.

In Year 5 this week, they have been learning how to convert fractions into decimals - Iyden has done really well with this and even said “oh my god, I’m finally getting it in maths”. Isaiah was very pleased to be moved up a group in swimming and Ava went the extra mile at the weekend by going on a special trip to Waterloo station to visit the Windrush Statue by Basil Watson.

In year 6, they had a fantastic, active learning experience in science where they had the opportunity to dissect a lamb’s heart as part of their circulatory system topic. This was a fantastic opportunity for the children and by the end of the lesson, even those who were apprehensive (including Miss Lambert!) about taking part were getting stuck in with their scalpels!
