Happy Friday! Although it’s been a shorter week for the children, they have certainly packed in lots of exciting and meaningful learning.
A big highlight was our VE Day assembly, led by Miss Lambert. The children learned about the significance of Victory in Europe Day and why it's important to remember and reflect on this moment in history.
We were also thrilled to welcome our KS2 families into school for our reading morning. Events like these are a great reminder of the importance of nurturing a love of reading and helping children develop as confident, curious readers. We’re already looking forward to welcoming more families next Friday for our next reading morning. Parents of Year 1 children, please note that there will be a Phonics Screening Check workshop before school, and we warmly encourage all Year 1 families to attend.
In today’s celebration assembly, children were asked to reflect on the week and share one thing that made them feel proud. It was a lovely opportunity for us to celebrate not only academic achievements but moments of kindness, effort, and personal growth. Here’s what some of the children shared:
Molly (Reception) – “I was proud because I helped my friend after they fell over.”
Darby (Year 1) – “I’m proud of how I helped coach my partner in English.”
Isabel (Year 2) – “I was proud of my first ever acrostic poem!”
Ronnie (Year 3) – “I finally solved a tricky maths question after struggling at the beginning.”
Anayah (Year 4) – “My handwriting has improved so much, and I’m really proud of it.”
Ope (Year 5) – “I’m proud of the vocabulary I came up with in English. I even learned what ‘mirthless’ means!”
Cairon (Year 6) – “I’ve been practising my reasoning in maths, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come.”
These moments reflect the incredible effort and resilience our children show every day.
As we approach the Year 6 SATS assessments, I want to take a moment to say how very proud we are of the children’s hard work, dedication and resilience through the preparations. These assessments are designed to test the knowledge and skills that the children have developed throughout their primary education, an opportunity for them to show off all that they have learned. I have no doubt that our Year 6 children will do amazingly. These assessments are just one part of their academic journey, and we will continue to support and nurture their growth beyond them.
So many amazing things happened this week, and so much more to come next week - I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing you back on Monday.
With very best wishes, Mrs Cook and the Rockliffe Manor team
Learning this week
Let’s look at the learning from this week …
Nursery
This week in Nursery, the children have been diving into their core text The Very Hungry Caterpillar to explore healthy and unhealthy foods. They’ve had fun sharing their favourite foods and discussing whether they’re best enjoyed often or in moderation. As part of their learning, the children also tasted vegetables such as parsnips, carrots, and broccoli—sparking lots of curiosity and conversation!
Reception
Reception have been working hard to build their writing stamina this week. The children were thrilled to receive their brand-new floor books, which they'll now use for morning writing, phonics spelling, and literacy activities instead of whiteboards. In maths, they've been exploring part-whole models, halves, and sharing through practical tasks. Remi impressed everyone by explaining that a cut apple wasn’t a whole “because some of it was missing!”
Year 1
Year 1 has been inspired by the magical world of Atlantis! From wanting to meet mermaids to riding dolphins with Dougal, the children came up with brilliant reasons why they’d love to visit. Raphie said he just wants to see the world and explore new places! They have also started planning persuasive letters to convince their adults to let them embark on this exciting adventure. In DT, the children enjoyed a fantastic weaving session, mastering the ‘over and under’ technique to create vibrant designs—Miss Emslie was very impressed!
Year 2
Year 2 has been busy expanding their descriptive writing skills. They explored two contrasting settings from their core text and created thoughtful acrostic poems using the word PROMISE. Miss Roper was incredibly proud of both their creativity and confidence during poetry performances. In maths, the children learned all about unit fractions, clearly identifying them as having a numerator of 1 and representing one part of a whole.
Year 3
This week in Year 3, children have been deepening their vocabulary through whole class reading. By exploring the meanings of new words and applying them in sentences, they were able to better understand the text. The class also studied manifestos from the UK’s four main political parties to identify features and promises—good and bad—as they prepare to write their own class manifestos.
Year 4
Year 4 has been learning about Judaism with Mrs Redhead, focusing on the significance of the synagogue and the role of a rabbi. Ayomide shared, “Rabbis are important because they read the Torah scrolls and lead ceremonies at the synagogue.” In computing, the class also explored how to change the mood of an image by adjusting brightness, contrast, saturation, and vignette settings—combining creativity with digital skills.
Year 5
This week in Year 5, the children tackled area and perimeter, focusing on compound shapes. Elia explained, “To find the area of a compound shape, you split it into two parts, calculate each, then add them together.” In science, they’ve been learning about space—Emily told us, “Uranus is the coldest planet in our solar system,” and Elia added, “Our sun is a dwarf star, which means it’s smaller than a typical star.” The children were full of wonder as they posed thoughtful questions about aliens and life beyond our solar system.
Year 6
Year 6 have shown fantastic perseverance and maturity as they continue preparing for their SATs. They’ve been proactive in identifying question types they find challenging and asking for extra practice to build their confidence. Their ability to apply key knowledge in a range of contexts has been impressive—well done to all for your determination and effort this week!

We wanted to share with you that this morning in assembly we spoke to the children about not bringing Pokémon cards into school. Lately, they’ve been causing a bit of fuss and upset among some of the children, and it’s beginning to take away from important learning time.We know the children really enjoy them, but we’d appreciate your support in making sure they leave their cards at home from next week. This will help us keep the focus on learning and keep things calm in the classroom.
We would like to increase our resources and maybe have a Lego/Duplo station at playtime. If any of our parents have Lego or Duplo that your child no longer plays with we would appreciate any donations.
