We hope that you have had a wonderful half term break with your children and that you were able to enjoy some quality time with each other. As we begin the second half of the Autumn term, we have so much to look forward to. It’s been a very brisk first week back at school, but one full of amazing learning opportunities! The children across the school have been immersing themselves in their new core texts and the teachers have provided ‘hook’ lessons to get the children excited.
As a new half term is upon us, we introduce our value of the half term, in Autumn 2 we will focus on our value of RESPECT. We began the week exploring what this would look like at Rockliffe Manor and the importance of showing our values, when no one is looking! When asking the children about why showing our values is important, Daisy said ‘It is important to show our values and think about our behaviour as it makes us the best person we can be, then we can make a change in the world’ Ketchie added ‘Our values help keep us safe’ and Layla shared ‘it is important to remind our friends of our values and show them what following them looks like’. We then explored how our values interlink, and whilst we focus on one value a half term, we should always try our best to show all of our values, both at school and in our everyday life.
On Monday we were excited to launch Food Fortnight, following the success of this last year. Over this week and next the children will have DT (Design and Technology) focused lessons where they will work towards creating a dish inspired by a chosen culture. In doing this, we want to celebrate what makes the adults and children in our school community unique. At the end of the two weeks, the children will showcase their learning by contributing to Rockliffe’s infamous World Café. This year our World Café will take place on Thursday 14th November 2024 and parents are invited to the World Café after school and to donate a dish! It is a fantastic opportunity to come together and celebrate our community, so we hope to see you there. Please take a look at twitter to see how this learning is unfolding.
Although it seems a little while off yet, our Friends of Rockliffe have begun to plan our Winter Fair. This year we are trying a different approach of holding this after school on Friday 13th December - more information about this and our other winter festivities will be shared soon.
We look forward to seeing everyone back to school on Monday and hope you all have a wonderful weekend.
With very best wishes, Mrs Cook and the Rockliffe Manor team
Let’s take a look at some of the learning this week …
This week in Nursery, the children have been immersed in exciting role-play activities tied to their literacy journey! They transformed the home corner into a grocery market, taking on roles such as shopkeepers, mums, and dads. The children also had fun practising their writing skills by making shopping lists and even creating receipts—bringing their play to life through mark-making activities!
Reception children have smoothly settled back into their daily routines, showing readiness and enthusiasm for the new school term. This week, they explored the theme of family, talking about their own families and learning about their friends' families as well. To finish off the week, they drew family portraits and independently labelled each family member, using their phonics skills—such an exciting way to build literacy and independence!
Year 1 has had a fantastic week! In maths, they worked on creating number sentences and learning about “fact families.” They tackled challenges with a positive attitude, showing great perseverance! In DT (Design and Technology), they started learning about fruits, vegetables, and balanced diets. Did you know peas are technically a fruit? The children enjoyed discovering these fun facts, as did Mrs Cook!
On Tuesday, Year 2 found a delightful surprise—a suitcase with a bear and a note saying, “Please look after this bear.” The children were thrilled to discover it was Paddington Bear! They read a letter from Aunt Lucy, who asked them to take care of him and even shared a recipe for marmalade sandwiches. The children had a wonderful time making and tasting their very own marmalade sandwiches!
Year 3 kicked off Food Fortnight with their first Design and Technology (DT) lesson, where they learned about recipes and cooking steps. Using iPads and QR codes to access recipes, the children efficiently explored different ingredients and steps to follow, making learning fun and hands-on. They worked well together, and their interest in new foods and cooking was delightful to see!
In Year 4, the children launched Food Fortnight with a taste test of traditional Greek foods like olives, feta cheese, and pita bread. While reactions to the foods varied, the children were able to express what they liked or disliked based on the different flavours. Ella and Mr. Smith even introduced the children to the “umami” taste—adding an exciting new word to their vocabulary!
This week, Year 5 showed great effort and focus in maths, trying different approaches to solve problems and becoming more confident with numbers. They’ve also been diving into their core text, sparking thoughtful discussions and a love for reading as they explore the story’s themes together. It’s been wonderful to see their growing enthusiasm!
Year 6 had a creative week designing posters for DT fortnight, using Canva and Adobe Express to create eye-catching, persuasive posters. The children showcased their creativity by choosing images and phrases that make an impact, building their skills in both design and persuasive communication.
We hope you enjoyed hearing about this week’s learning highlights. Have a wonderful weekend!

From September, we will have available two full time places. If you would like to show your interest please contact the office where we can give you further information.
We wanted to share with you that this morning in assembly we spoke to the children about not bringing Pokémon cards into school. Lately, they’ve been causing a bit of fuss and upset among some of the children, and it’s beginning to take away from important learning time.We know the children really enjoy them, but we’d appreciate your support in making sure they leave their cards at home from next week. This will help us keep the focus on learning and keep things calm in the classroom.
We would like to increase our resources and maybe have a Lego/Duplo station at playtime. If any of our parents have Lego or Duplo that your child no longer plays with we would appreciate any donations.
Every Tuesday morning from 8:50am, Rockliffe will be holding a Coffee morning. Please feel free to pop along and join us. Friends of Rockllife joining to start the planning for events. All welcome
