“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” — Dr. Seuss
Following a wonderful week celebrating books during Book Week and World Book Day, it has been fantastic to see our children embracing the joy of reading. From dressing up as favourite characters to sharing stories and exploring new books in class, the week has reminded us how reading can spark curiosity, imagination and a lifelong love of learning.
As we continue to encourage a lifelong love of books, we are delighted to share some exciting news about the future of reading in our school. A brand new chapter for our Library!
We are thrilled to announce that our school has been selected to partner with Libraries for Primaries this year! This exciting project is set to transform our reading space, just off the school hall, into a vibrant hub of imagination and discovery. As part of this initiative, we will be receiving 500 brand-new books to refresh our shelves, along with stylish new furniture designed to create a cosy, welcoming environment for our children. We are also particularly excited to introduce a Yoto Player to the library, offering a modern, screen-free way for children to enjoy audiobooks and music. This project represents a significant investment in our children’s literacy and love for reading, and we can’t wait to see our young readers exploring the new space soon!
Alongside all the excitement of Book Week, we also welcomed a very special delivery to the school this week - duckling eggs! For many years we have enjoyed the experience of watching chicks hatch in school, but this is the first time we have had ducklings, making it an extra special moment for children and adults alike. Over the course of the week, the eggs have begun to hatch and it has been truly wonderful to see the sense of awe and curiosity this has brought across the school. Our children have loved checking on the eggs, learning about the hatching process and watching the tiny ducklings begin their journey into the world. It has been a magical experience for everyone involved, and we are all very excited to see what the coming week will bring as the ducklings continue to grow and explore their new surroundings.
This week, we were also delighted to welcome Tyreece Campbell to Rockliffe Manor! Tyreece spoke to our pupils about his journey as a professional footballer with Charlton Athletic, highlighting the importance of hard work, effort, and having positive role models and coaches who believed in him.
His story resonated strongly with our school values of effort and responsibility and the children were clearly inspired by his achievements. Our children asked a wide range of thoughtful questions, articulating their ideas confidently and were thrilled to receive Tyreece’s signature before posing for a whole-school photo to commemorate the visit.
It was a truly memorable experience that gave our children a real-life example of dedication and perseverance in action. It was an inspiring experience that will stay with us all for a long time.
As a truly wonderful week comes to a close, we reflect on the learning, laughter and inspiration that has filled our school. So many memories have been made and shared experiences have been enjoyed by all. We hope the children have loved every moment as much as we have and we can’t wait to see what next week brings. Wishing you a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing everyone on Monday!
With very best wishes, Mrs Cook and the Rockliffe Manor team.
Learning this week
Let’s take a look at some of the learning that has happened this week…
Nursery has had a wonderful week continuing to develop their fine motor skills through creative activities such as cutting and sticking to design their own masks. The children also practiced their precision and coordination by using small scooping tools to "feed" oats to the Three Little Pigs! We were also delighted to celebrate World Book Day together; many of the children looked fantastic dressed as their favorite fairytale characters.
This week, Reception has been "busy bees" during their composition lessons. The children spent time observing nature videos and orally rehearsing what they could see using the sentence stem "I can see..." It was wonderful to hear them recalling key facts from previous lessons with such enthusiasm. Sofia shared that bees "vomit into each other’s mouths to make honey," Albie remembered that bees have five eyes, and William impressed us all by recalling that a bee’s tongue is called a proboscis.
Year 1 has been exploring the story of Rama and Sita this week, discussing the important moral that "good triumphs over evil." The children worked hard to sequence the story and write their own short descriptions of the events. In Maths, they have been using a range of resources to solve addition and subtraction problems, which they then applied to creating their own "number stories" for their friends to solve. It has also been a pleasure to see the class’s consistent effort and responsibility recognized by various adults across the school, particularly during their weekly gymnastics sessions.
In Year 2, the children have been busy inferring the emotions of different characters in our core text, Starbird. The class discussed how they could help Starbird gain his freedom and what the daughter could do to assist. They decided that the daughter needed to persuade the Moon King and have started generating ideas for a persuasive letter. The children have been focusing on the structure of exclamation sentences, with Rayan creating a particularly powerful example: "What a horrible king you are!"
It has been an incredibly productive week for Year 3! In Maths, the children have enjoyed diving into the world of fractions, learning how a denominator represents the equal parts a whole has been divided into. In English, they have been constructing direct speech sentences based on the characters from our core text, Hidden Figures.
Year 4 had a fantastic week immersing themselves in the world of Cubism during their Art lessons. After exploring the unique features of Pablo Picasso’s work, they used these techniques to create their own striking self-portraits. In English, the children have been researching the Himalayas to find the most exciting facts for a travel brochure. Ronnie mentioned that he would love to go rock climbing and paragliding if he visited, while Freddie shared that he would go animal spotting in hopes of seeing a snow leopard.
Year 5 has had an action-packed week, beginning with peer mediation training on Monday. Melisa and Anaya were able to articulate their learning beautifully, explaining how mediators listen without interfering to help resolve conflicts. The week was made even more special by a trip to the Imperial War Museum. The children had the opportunity to examine real artifacts from WWII, which provided a fantastic way to consolidate their learning in History.
Year 6 has shown great resilience and determination this week as they sat their assessments in preparation for next term’s SATs. It has been amazing to see the progress they have made and to hear how positive they feel about the challenges ahead. It was also a significant week as the children found out their secondary school placements for September. This led to some heartfelt moments of reflection, as the class spent time sharing their favorite memories of their journey here at Rockliffe.
