Message from Mrs Cook

So, what has been happening since our last newsletter?

This week saw the return of one of the children’s favourite school events, sports day! This year, a little like no other, with our first whole school event, held on Polling Day. We used the day to its best advantage by kicking off the day with a lovely picnic style lunch. Families then joined us for the official racing and sporting to begin. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the entire school community for their incredible support in making yesterday's community picnic and sports day event such a resounding success. A special mention goes to Mr Harrachsingh and Mr O’Regan for their outstanding leadership and coordination; they were instrumental in the seamless execution of the day’s activities. Their hard work, along with the collective efforts of you all, truly showcased the spirit and unity of our school. Thank you all for your commitment and enthusiasm in fostering a vibrant and supportive community.

On Tuesday Nursery went to the Slade library! They were so excited to get a chance to read new books and also listen to a story. The Nursery children walked beautifully showing the Rockliffe Manor values and we’re so proud of them! At the library they listened to a story where they participated in acting like the different birds that were shown in the book. The class then took a tour around the library and had a chance to choose their own books. Many left saying how much fun they had and that they can’t wait to go back in Reception!

Another week and another stay and play for our new Reception children, we had our second visit and it was a wonderful experience! The children eagerly participated in various activities that began exploring our school values of curiosity, kindness, and respect. They explored their new environment with curiosity, made new friends with kindness, and showed respect for their teachers and classmates. We are so excited to welcome the new additions to the Rockliffe family into the school community. We look forward to seeing them grow and thrive in the coming year!

And today, Year 1 had a fabulous time on their beach trip to Broadstairs. Despite the weather, all the children had so much fun building sandcastles, paddling in the water, and enjoying delicious ice creams. Year 1 were so thrilled with their trip, they will write a detailed account of the day, reliving all the fun they had!

Tomorrow is the Summer Fair! The Friends of Rockliffe have worked tirelessly to put on this event for the community. We really hope that lots of you can make it and we are sure that the children and adults alike will have lots of fun. We are continuing to monitor the weather forecast, as we want to ensure this event is enjoyable for all. If the decision is made to postpone the fair we will communicate this with you via text in the morning.

We look forward to the week ahead with our meet the teacher sessions, where the children will find out who their new teachers are!

Until then, wishing you all a lovely weekend.

With very best wishes, Mrs Cook and the Rockliffe Manor team

Learning this week

Let’s take a look at the learning this week …

Nursery this week has been doing some exceptional learning in their little wandle foundation phonics phase! The children have demonstrated excellent retention and recall skills, when confidently identifying the correct phonemes for each image; such as ‘sh for shells’. Mr Harracksingh has also been really impressed with Nurseries oral blending, they are listening to the phonemes in words and becoming masters at blending them and putting them together to say the correct word.

Children in Reception this week have been exploring fictional and nonfiction books during our literacy sessions. The children have been taking part in small competitions in their kagan 4s to guess if the information from the book we looked at was fictional or nonfiction. Alfie said “It is fictional because Pigs cannot build houses and wolves cannot talk, this information is not factual”.

In Year 1 this week, the children have learned to tell the time to an hour and half an hour. The children used analogue clocks to represent time and quiz their partners on it. The children were so confident when explaining that the short hand represents hours and the long hand represents minutes. The children have been learning about the Jewish celebration of Shabbat. They can articulate what Shabbat is, why and how it’s celebrated. Very well done to everyone!

Year 2 have really enjoyed their reading sessions this week. They are very confident at using Ipads to access their books and are loving the fluency books. Miss Emslie and Year 2 have had a big focus on spelling! They have been using a range of spelling strategies and children seem to enjoy them especially when choosing alternative graphemes.

And In Year 3, the children had a really great discussion in their History about the mummification process. The children were enthralled by these discussions, particularly about the process of the brain being removed through their nose! The class are looking forward to their trip to the library this afternoon as they have all expressed their want to find books about Ancient Egypt!

The Year 4 children have been working hard practising for their sharing assembly, they’ve learnt their fabulous songs and dance moves and were so excited to share this with the school and their families. In maths, the children have been developing their shape knowledge and have begun identifying different angles; obtuse, acute and right angle. They even had a go at using protractors for the first time!

In year 5 this week, the children have been working hard on solving decimals in maths. It was great seeing the children working with Mr White in a focused group. There were some very challenging, reasoning questions that needed some lateral thinking and teamwork; Mr White always allows the children the space to collaborate and share ideas regarding this and that’s why they were so successful with their learning.

In year 6 this week - it’s been fairly quiet as a lot of the children have been visiting their new secondary schools. However, this has not stopped some great learning such as exploring electricity in Science and exploring the physical features of the USA and comparing them to the UK in Geography. It was nice to see the children excited about one of the tasks designs being called ‘connect four’. Olivia said it helped her understand how to form her ideas.
