Happy Friday, everyone! It's wonderful to wrap up the week under a bright blue sky. Now that we've officially passed the midpoint of the Autumn 1 term, it’s incredible to reflect on just how quickly time is flying—especially when we’re having so much fun! This week has been another fantastic one here at Rockliffe Manor, with the children diving even deeper into their learning experiences. At this stage of the term, the students are beginning to plan and create their final projects in English and Art, and we can’t wait to see their creativity shine!
In assembly this week, Miss Emslie relaunched our Junior Leadership team at Rockliffe Manor, and the excitement among our students is palpable. Next week, children from Year 1 to Year 6 who would like to apply for roles within our Junior Leadership Team will have the opportunity to present their reasons and aspirations to their classroom peers before a vote takes place. At Rockliffe Manor we know that encouraging children to take on leadership roles is crucial for their personal growth and development. It fosters a sense of responsibility, confidence, and the ability to work collaboratively with others. By participating in leadership roles, our students learn the value of active participation, decision-making, and empathy, all of which are essential skills that will serve them well not only during their time at Rockliffe Manor but throughout their lives.
We are excited to share that the Friends of Rockliffe have been hard at work developing the nature garden pond. The long awaited (and needed) make over will create a beautiful and enriching space for our children to explore and learn. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Friends group for their dedication and the positive impact they are making on our school environment. Their efforts in enhancing the nature garden will truly make Rockliffe Manor an even more special and inviting place for everyone. The children are already enjoying seeing the improvements and we can't wait to see how it continues to grow!
Before we wish you well, we would like to remind families about uniform expectations. While children are not expected to wear Rockliffe Manor branded uniform, children should only be wearing grey trousers, skirts or shorts, white tops and navy cardigans or jumpers. Items such as hoodies are not allowed and shoes should be black. Uniform is an important part of school; it not only fosters a sense of equality and pride but also a sense of belonging to Rockliffe Manor. This also relates to our PE kits, Navy bottoms and plain white t-shirts only should be worn. No football shirts/ kits, or clothing with large logos should be worn during PE lessons. Ensuring that all children are in the correct uniform helps maintain a focused learning environment and encourages a sense of unity among students. We appreciate your support in upholding these expectations and helping our children represent Rockliffe Manor with pride.
Thank you for your continued cooperation, and we hope you have a restful and enjoyable weekend. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out.
With very best wishes, Mrs Cook and the Rockliffe Manor team
Let’s take a look at some of the learning this week …
Nursery this week have been enjoying learning all about 2D shapes. The children took part in an exciting activity during their maths session, going on a hunt looking for shapes in their environment. The children were excited to then share what they found with their peers and teachers. Teddy said “The clock is the same as a circle”. Sophia said “This door is definitely a rectangle not a square”.
Children in Reception this week built on their learning around our school values, they focused specifically on collaboration. The children shared their ideas on the skills we need to support us in collaborating with others and then implemented it into their daily routines, such as tidy up time. The children were able to independently find a partner to collaborate with, to tidy up an area of the learning environment. It was a pleasure to see the children communicating, problem solving and collaborating together to look after their classroom.
In Year 1 this week, they have been looking at the United Kingdom in Geography. The class spoke about the different countries within the UK and had a go at identifying them on a map. They then went on to discuss what a capital city is and its importance before locating them on the map too. In maths, they have tried really hard in understanding the concept of greater than, less than and equal to.
Year 2 has been working hard in maths this week! They have been practising their 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s times tables and became pattern spotters in the times tables. Kairo proudly shared that numbers ending in 0 will appear in the 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s. The class have also been practising their oracy skills in English, after writing an encouraging speech as Izzy’s Grandpa the children presented their speeches to their peers before evaluating against our oracy framework.
In Year 3, the children were learning to classify rocks using a Venn diagram, focusing on different characteristics such as texture, colour, and hardness. They compare and contrast the properties of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks to find common and unique features. By placing the rocks into overlapping sections, they visualise how some rocks share properties while others are distinct. This hands-on activity helped deepen their understanding of rock types and scientific classification.
In Year 4, during science, the children explored the similarities and differences between melting and freezing. They observed how both processes involved changes in the state of matter, with melting turning a solid into a liquid and freezing turning a liquid into a solid. By comparing temperatures and the role of heat in each process, they gained a deeper understanding of how matter reacts to temperature changes. This investigation using ice melting in their hands and a kettle heating up, helped them see the reversible nature of these changes in everyday materials.
Year 5 has been learning about the human and physical features of Ethiopia. The children identified the highlands and lowlands of the country and they discussed how the water scarcity can affect a country’s economy. The children are also very excited about their science learning about forces and cannot wait to carry out an experiment where they test air resistance.
Year 6 has been working really hard in science and geography this week. In science, the children have been classifying microorganisms according to their shapes and they can confidently speak about what microorganisms are, how they can be harmful or useful to other organisms. In geography, the children have continued to learn about the physical features of the Amazon Rainforest and they used key vocabulary to articulate their thoughts and ideas.

We wanted to share with you that this morning in assembly we spoke to the children about not bringing Pokémon cards into school. Lately, they’ve been causing a bit of fuss and upset among some of the children, and it’s beginning to take away from important learning time.We know the children really enjoy them, but we’d appreciate your support in making sure they leave their cards at home from next week. This will help us keep the focus on learning and keep things calm in the classroom.
We would like to increase our resources and maybe have a Lego/Duplo station at playtime. If any of our parents have Lego or Duplo that your child no longer plays with we would appreciate any donations.
Every Tuesday morning from 8:50am, Rockliffe will be holding a Coffee morning. Please feel free to pop along and join us. Friends of Rockllife joining to start the planning for events. All welcome
