Message from Mrs Cook

We hope that you have had a wonderful half term break with your children and that you were able to enjoy some quality time with each other. As we begin the second half of the Autumn term, we have so much to look forward too. It’s been a very wet and windy first week back at school, but one full of amazing learning opportunities! The children across the school have been immersing themselves in their new core texts and the teachers have provided ‘hook’ lessons to get the children excited.

As a new half term is upon us, we introduce our value of the half term, in Autumn 2 we will focus on our value of RESPECT. We began the week exploring what this would look like at Rockliffe Manor and the importance of showing our values, when no one is looking! When asking the children about what respect means to them, Evie said ‘To be kind to others and respect their beliefs, and also to take responsibility for other people’s things’. Darcy agreed and shared the importance of ‘being kind to your friends’. Oscar added ‘To me it means not interrupting people when they are speaking and to listen to them’. What a wonderful start, we look forward to hearing more from the children as the term goes on.

This week we are proud to share that Chloe, from year 6, has been selected as one of the 24 school winners to have her artwork displayed at the Woolwich Contemporary Print fair alongside other winning students and world-renowned artists. Chloe attended the awards ceremony with her family on Thursday 3rd November and we are beyond proud at her achievement. Chloe shared ‘I feel really proud. I said to myself Don’t get excited’ because I thought I wasn’t going to win and I would be proud of whoever the winner was, and now I can be proud of myself because I won. It was very unexpected’. Congratulations Chloe!

Although it seems a little while off yet, our Winter festivities will soon be upon us, dates for these will be shared soon. But before that…tonight we plan to end the week with a bang, with our first Firework event, this is a wonderful opportunity for building community spirit and making memories. We hope to see you all there.

Please do explore our new newsletter template to find out what has been happening within our classrooms, key dates and messages from the office.

As always, we are keen for feedback on our newsletter and would love to hear your thoughts on this new look. If you would like us to include any other content. Please email us on info@inspirerockliffe.co.uk

We very much look forward to seeing everyone back to school on Monday and hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

With very best wishes, Mrs Cook and the Rockliffe Manor team

Learning this week

Let’s take a look at some of the learning that has happened this week….

This week, Reception have shown independence and responsibility as they began to work in their English and maths books for the first time. Lily was very nervous about starting in her books but really enjoyed it, we look forward to seeing the learning as the term goes on. Jamie was so proud of his work that he produced that he wanted to take his book home! In maths, the children have been using tens frames to represent numbers 1-5. As the week progressed, the class were error spotting for their teacher. Celina explained to Miss Gallagher that she was wrong because she put all of the blocks in one of the squares when she was supposed to put one in each square. Also, in their English learning and throughout the provision in the classroom, reception have been exploring food through their senses linked to their new core text ‘10 Pomegranate Street’. What a fantastic way to start the new term!

Now let’s take a look at Year 2! This week Year 2 have been focusing on adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers and have been exchanging a ten for 10 ones which has been challenging but rewarding because of their build in number confidence. In English, the children have been introduced to creating their own stories based on inference of pictures as well as justifying an argument with pros and cons. They really enjoyed this as they were able to give their own opinions and the reasoning behind it. Year 2 were excited to learn a new song in music based on the style of jazz. They made their own dance moves to match the tempo and enjoyed the fast rhythm of the song.

I liked music because I liked the beat and the music sounded fast and fun” - Jacob

I think the music lesson was good because I found the beat really quick” - Carlo

Maths was fun because subtracting is really interesting to learn which made it easier” - Arthur

When I did my argument in English I said we should go to school because we get to learn instead of staying at home play games and watch TV” - Akoma

This week, year 6 have had a great start to the second autumn term. They have been learning all about Charles Darwin in science, they are very enthused about their new core text (Trash), especially when they came back to find their classroom had been trashed but Jaslyn found a wallet full of cash amongst it! They also performed some excellent role play as one of the characters who lives on a dumpsite. In geography they are beginning to research different charities based in the Congo and are beginning to prepare ideas for their own charity. On Friday, they had their second library trip of the year and the children were very excited to change over their books for new ones, some were even reading theirs on the way back to school!

"I loved going to the library, it's a fun walk there and I get to chat with my friends on the way." Olivia

"I liked finding out about Charles Darwin and the theory of evolution." Archie

"I'm so glad I get to live in a house, have clean clothes and fresh food - I would never want to be a trash-boy!" Lilly

Year 5 have been representing emotions of the main character in their new core text. We have worked collaboratively to decide on our facial expressions and movements to show different parts of the story so far.

At Rockliffe Manor Primary School, we pride ourselves on the strong sense of belonging and the community sense we have built.

In order to ensure these values are met, please may we remind everyone of our commitment to each other and the entire school community. You can read the Parent, Carer and Visitor Code of Conduct on our website.

With over 200 children attending Rockliffe Manor Primary School you wouldn't believe the amount of items we find scattered about the playground, the hall and the corridors!

Our staff regularly sweep all the areas and return all items that are named with either a fabric pen or a label. However, the rest of the items that are not peronalised with a name end up in the Lost Property bin located just inside the school hall—something we urge you to check often.

Please can we ask all parents to ensure all items of clothing, bags, water bottles, lunch bags, coats and PE kits are clearly labelled with your child’s name.

Thank you so much

We are delighted to advise that you can book your Parents Evening appointments with your child's class teacher on Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th November 2022.
