PRE-Plogging session: pollutans
Before taking action to face the main environmental challenges at school (earth pollution), we were on observation duty and made a list of the water pollutants we usually find in our playground, which is as follows:
Plastic: bottles, cartons, snacks, wrappings...
Aluminium foil: foil for snacks and sandwiches.
Cardboard: school material
Paper: handkerchiefs...
We also came across some stranger things:
Wood: remains of school material.
Cigarette butts ?
Then we did a research on the different types of pollutants, shared our findings in class, and agreed that nowadays plastic is one of the greatest water pollutant. It is basically made of natural materials such as cellulose, coal, natural gas, salt, and oil through a polymerization or polycondensation process.
Plastic is non-biodegradable, and it is estimated to take between 100 and 1,000 years to decompose, which is why it is considered a very slow and long-term decomposition material. A plastic bottle takes up to 500 years to disintegrate, although if buried this time is even longer.
There are several solutions to avoid plastic: REDUCING, REUSING and RECYCLING.
