The word Photography means 'drawing with light'. We all carry light within us and sometimes life experiences cause our light to darken. Humanity consists of traumas, pains, hardships, and losses which leave us feeling hopeless and disconnected from ourselves and those around us. I use photography as a tool in enhancing the light, helping us become more aware of ourselves so that we can live a more authentic life in this world. I’m here not to teach you, but to learn with you, as we navigate through life’s seasons. This is a safe space, without judgement. Let’s use photography as a tool for growth and shed light into our wellness of body and spirit.
A Photo Therapy session is usually 55 minutes and is a combination of portraits and talk therapy. I guide you along with questions and topics of discussion similar to traditional therapy while capturing expressions throughout the discussion. Sessions can include family members, couples/spouses, or individuals. Each session has a goal and purpose. Approximately 1-2 weeks after our session, we will have an in person or online session where we will explore the portfolio together to explore your experience and observations. The photography portion of the session only has to occur once and may be followed by multiple therapy sessions to process the experience but this is not a requirement.
Photo Therapy is a private, confidential experience that is not shared with the public. Just like traditional therapy, photo therapy sessions are confidential. This means that your images are not posted on social media and your personal information is not shared with anyone. Photo sessions may be taken inside or outdoors, preferably in a non-crowded public space. I like to select outdoor locations that are secluded and private. I do not own a studio but portraits may be taken within the therapy room. The location is dependent upon the goals of the session and will be arranged together in advance.
The Photo Therapy package includes a 55 minute photography session and a 55 minute follow up online/in-person session. You will also receive 10-12 images from our photography session to keep. The basic package cost is $450. Additional therapy sessions start at a rate of $170 per 55 minute session. Please note that I do not accept insurance for the photo package sessions but I can provide you with receipt/superbill to submit to your insurance or you are welcome to use your Health Spending Account (HSA) card.
"Great photography is about depth of feeling, not depth of field.”
– Peter Adams
Photography combined with therapy, involves using the form of photography as a tool for emotional expression and healing. The therapist (photographer) works with a client on the following key aspects of this approach:
Self-Expression: The photographer (therapist) gives prompts to allow individuals to express their feelings and experiences while capturing emotions and expressions with a camera. Images captured will reflect a deeper reflection and awareness into self.
Mindfulness: Through a guided photo session, individuals focus on their surroundings and are encouraged to be present in the moment. Clients are encouraged to be mindful of their feelings and practice being grounded. This can help reduce anxiety and improve mental well-being.
Storytelling: Through photography and guidance, individuals can tell their personal stories, share their perspectives and express their emotions. Clients can view their story while viewing the proofs in a follow therapy session.
Reflection: Reviewing the images together in the following session can lead to deeper self-reflection and insight into one’s thoughts and feelings.
Empowerment: With guidance on poses and positions, a collection of photographs can give a sense of agency and confidence as individuals have a collection of images to help improve self-esteem.
Therapeutic Photography: The process of the client taking photographs during their own time of images of their own choice can help reduce anxiety and improve mental well-being. It can promote being more awareness of your surroundings and being more present in the moment. Images taken by an individual can also be shared during a therapy session for a reflection of their experience (optional).
Overall, combining photography with therapeutic practices can be a powerful way to enhance mental health and personal growth.
