Before we start
It is important to remember that discussing safeguarding children and child abuse can be distressing for some of us, and this is ok. Please make sure you look after yourselves, if you need to take a minute please do and seek support if appropriate.
An important reminder – as we move through this presentation we will be thinking about safeguarding children in general. However, some groups of children are additionally vulnerable and at increased risk of experiencing harm and abuse. We know from the research that disabled children and children with SEND are at increased risk of abuse and also less likely to receive protection when they experience abuse. There are many reasons for this which include perceptions of disability, communication difficulties, and how signs and indicators can be mis-attributed to a diagnosed condition and therefore explained away.
