I was born in Salerno (Italy) the 21st of February 1966.
I got my M.S. degree (1992) in Earth Sciences at Sapienza – University of Rome (Italy).
Since its fundation in 2002, I lead the High Pressure High Temperature Laboratory of Experimental Volcanology and Geophysics at INGV - Roma.
I was member of the Great Risks Committee (CGR) Volcanic Risk Area of the Civil Protection Department and INGV delegate in the Civil Protection National Operating Committee.
From 2014 to March 2017 I was member of the Board for the Management of the Agreement between Civil Protection Department and INGV.
I was involved in the emergency management during the volcanic crisis at Etna (2001) and Stromboli (2003 and 2007) and the seismic crisis in Emilia Romagna (2012) and Amatrice (Central Italy, 2016-2017).
From 2014 to 2016 I leaded the INGV volcanic Task Force V-EMER coordinating its activities in the field during the volcanic crisis at Chaparrastique-San Miguel volcano in El Salvador.
I'm awarded of the National Scientific Qualification to function as Full Professor (competition sector 04/A1: Geochemistry, Petrology, Volcanology), in Italian Universities.
From 2013 to 2015 I was topic Editor of Solid Earth, Journal of the European Geophysical Union.
I was principal investigator or team member of several Italian and European projects and Chair of the Working Group Analytical and Experimental Laboratories of the ESFRI Project EPOS (Preparatory Phase).
My scientific expertise and research activities mostly concern volcanic hazard with particular attention to the study of magma plumbing systems, phase relationships under variable environmental conditions (pressure, temperature, volatiles), magma/crust interaction processes and gas emission from crustal sources, chemical and physical properties of melts and rocks to constrain the mechanisms controlling earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
In the field, my interest concerns the study of basaltic activity. I have leaded and partecipated to field campaigns on active volcanoes in Italy, Guatemala, Vanuatu, Indonesia, Japan, USA, Iceland.
