IHS is proud to offer students the opportunity to play violin, viola, cello, or bass in our string orchestra program. This elective course offers students the chance to participate in daily rehearsals and weekly lessons. Orchestra students perform in several concerts throughout the year. Additionally, they can choose to participate in several orchestra-related activities outside of school, including chamber groups, Solo / Small Ensemble Festival, various regional honors orchestras, Simpson College Community Orchestra, and/or the Des Moines Youth Symphony groups.
Students in orchestra should have an instrument plus the following supplies: rosin, shoulder rest or sponge (violin/viola only), rock stop (cello/bass only), and music and lesson book material assigned by the teachers. We recommend that families rent instruments from Becker’s Fine Stringed Instruments or Rieman Music to have the best options for equipment and repair, but we do have a limited amount of school instruments available for students who cannot afford a rental. Email Mrs. Terrell to request a school instrument.
Every year, the IHS Orchestra, and 7th and 8th grade orchestras, perform our annual Teddy Bear Concert and Raffle Fundraiser! The orchestras perform exciting popular music arranged for string orchestra, and the audience can purchase raffle tickets to win teddy bears and other stuffed animals.
If you would like to donate a teddy bear or other stuffed animal for the fundraiser, please contact Mrs. Terrell at heidi.terrell@indianola.k12.ia.us to arrange a time for drop-off.
