CORE High School Program (CORE HSP) offers local youth with work readiness training after-school over the course of 12-weeks during the school year and 5 weeks over the summer.
HSP's program designed is based on ODE's 4 work-based learning strategies to engage low-income youth in career readiness:
Learning about work. HSP exposes youth to various careers through site tours, guest speakers, and panels. The curriculum covers local job opportunities in four high-growth sectors (healthcare, tech, construction and manufacturing) helping students explore careers algined with their interests and skills.
Learning for work. Students conduct informational interviews and job shadowing, gaining insights into job responsibilities and the work environment. Group volunteer opportunities further enhance their teamwork and communication skills.
Learning through work. HSP uses simulation kits for hands-on hard skill development relevant to trade jobs and offers mock interviews, resume preparation, and professional attire guidance.
Learning at work. The program provides vital work readiness training and certifications (e.g., CPR/First Aid, OSHA 10) necessary for entry-level positions, enhancing employability.
