Welcome to the 2022-23 Robotics Competition season. Your child has expressed interest in joining the iMiddle Robotics Team. This letter will let you know what to expect during the season and much more.
What we need:
Parent Donations
The competitions and robotics kits are not cheap. If you would like to donate to help support the team, we would really appreciate it. Recommended donation is $40.00 for the year. Students can turn in donations at Tuesday’s Robotics or to the school office. Checks should be written to iMiddle Community Foundation. Please designate that your donation is for the Robotics team. These donations will enable us to compete in the different competitions this year and buy the parts we need. Please note that this is a tax-deductible donation (the EIN is 26-36092802.) and that is voluntary. The club will always be open to everyone. Students should continue to participate even if they cannot donate anything. Thank you for your support!
Company Sponsorships- If you know of a company that would like to help sponsor the team, please let Mr. Nusser know. Company sponsors will be thanked by name on the website, on the back of the team shirts, and in the pit area during the competitions.
Adult volunteer(s)- I could really use a volunteer or two to help the work with the students during our Tuesday meetings after school from 3 to 4:30, help with fundraising, and/or help with the various weekend competitions (typically Saturdays). No robotics experience is necessary, only a love of working with young people and a good deal of patience. This is our third year and I am still learning with the students.
Meeting Times-
The robotics team meets on Tuesdays after school in the robotics room which is room 200. Room 200 is on the other side of the tennis courts near the bus turnaround. Our meeting time is from 3:00 to 4:00 pm but will probably be extended to 4:30 in a few weeks. The season starts in September and typically runs until late Jan depending on the competition dates. The competitions are usually on Saturdays and typically run for most of the day. While I am flexible and understand students may occasionally miss a meeting due to other responsibilities, joining the robotics team should be looked at as a commitment.
This year we will be competing in First Lego League. There are links on the team website which explain the competition in more detail. Each competition has a game where students can score points by having their robot do different tasks. Students will have to design, build, and program their robot in order to be successful. We will be breaking into smaller groups team between 3 to 6 students so students are able to do more.
Club Goal-
My main goal is to help students have fun engaging in engineering, robotics, and programming. I want students to learn about engineering, learn how to work with others, and learn about themselves while having fun with robots. This is a student driven club. The students will be making their own decisions about how to design and build their robot. They will create their game strategies for the competitions. Adults can offer gentle suggestions, give feedback, teach them new skills, and help students reach consensus, but ultimately it is up to the group of students who are engaged in the problem to come up with their solution. It is important for everyone to realize that this is a team activity. Students have to be willing to work together and problem solve if they want to be a part of this team.
Requirements for admission to the team
While I believe robotics is an incredible learning experience, school must come first. Students need to meet the iMiddle Academic Standards to be a part of the team. This means a minimum of a 2.0 GPA and good citizenship. If a student’s grades drop, he or she will be put on a contract and given time to bring the grades up. Please see Mr. Nusser for help if eligibility is a problem. Good behavior during team meetings is also very important. Students MUST be respectful of other students and their ideas. Students must also be able to work responsibly with the equipment.
Adult volunteer(s)-
If you are interested in helping, please email me tnusser@sandi.net and let me know your availability.
Final Note-
I really do want this to be a positive experience for everyone involved. If you or your child are having issues or have suggestions for improvement, please let me know. Thanks for your support.
