The second assignment Simon gave us was to prepare an entertaining and captivating podcast about some of the recent publications about the Shannon bottlenose dolphins. I prepared episodes 1 and 4 which you can listen to below, very exclusively! These podcasts are meant to educate the public and help stakeholders make informed decisions when they are planning activities that might influence the dolphins. Episode 2 about survival rate was made by Lorenzo, my fellow intern, and episode 3 will be about population viability where Miguel Blazquez talks about his own research. Make sure to check those out when they appear on the Facebook page of the IWDG!
This first episode focused on a paper by Mathijs Carmen, doctor Simon Berrow and doctor Joanne O’Brien that was published in May. The goal of the paper was to look at when and where the bottlenose dolphins in the Shannon Estuary hunt for food by listening to their sound production.
This episode I talked about the social structure of the dolphins, based on an article published in 2018 by Isabel Baker, Joanne O’Brien, Katherine McHugh, Simon Ingram and Simon Berrow. The goal of the paper was to look at the social structure of the resident Shannon bottlenose dolphin population by analysing which dolphins were sighted together.
