Food placed on a fishing area to entice fish as prey
Type of fish used to conduct this experiment
The installation set up to conduct the experiment
The place where cods are kept between each trial
The day starts by checking that every equipment is in place and that it is running correctly. Water should be flushing out of the tanks upon arrival.
We then open the 2 tanks and check that each cod in each tank is okay and swimming alright.
Next step we measure the 2 fish and transfer them into the net for the fish that have already done the experiment. We take 2 new cods and put them in the tanks.
We prepare the bait used for the experiment session of the day. It usually varies between shrimps and herring as it is the bait for which the cods responds the better. The bait recipient is then plugged into a circulatory system that will disperse the water infused from the bait into the tanks.
Last check of the systems and the experiment is ready to start and run for another 24 hours!
After we launch the experiment it will automatically run during a day.
The water infused from the bait will be sent into the tank on the left, right or both sides of the tanks depending on the programming we choose just before launching the system. Infrared lamps are set all around the tank and a camera is recording it 24/7. The aim is then so see if the fish responds to the bait income on the sides of the tank.
Then we come back the day after and restart the process all over again. Same day everyday!
This research aims to determine if cod respond naturally to bait and if yes which one. This could allow in the future to target easier the species of fish wanted while fishing and thus decrease bycatch.
