Over the course of my work under Professor Macusi, I've developed various results for his research project.
Whilst doing so, I've gradually improved, both as a data scientist and as a person.
In this final chapter, I'd like to summarize the current results of Professor Macusi's research project and my contribution to it. Afterwards, I'll also shortly provide my opinion of this Professional Practice experience.
In our research so far, we've managed to successfully map the spatial distribution of artisanal fishing efforts in the Davao Gulf for fishers from Governor Generoso, Malita and Samal Island during the months of March, April and May. Although we haven't yet been able to analyze the effects of the Davao Gulf closed fishing season, these analyses are expected to be performed later in the year, when data from June, July and August has also been gathered.
Additionally, for these same fishers, we've analyzed and discussed the most competitive fishing areas. We believe the regions seen in these maps should be taken into account when planning future management efforts, such that they minimally impact the lives of artisanal fishers whose contributions to the gulf's over-exploitation are minimal.
Furthermore, we've analyzed various correlations within our data, most of which were significant. By having done so, we hope to provide more insights regarding the intricacies of the Davao Gulf artisanal fisheries.
In addition to this, results produced in this Professional Practice serve as important data exploration steps assisting future efforts for this research project. With the eventual results of this research project, we hope to provide a significant contribution to the management efforts of the Davao Gulf, such that harm to the gulf may be limited and such that the future of the people depending upon it is certain.
My contribution to Professor Macusi's research project mainly pertained data analysis.
I'm happy to report my mentor said he was satisfied with my work during this Professional Practice. In fact, he'll even be including a map I produced using the interview data in the final scientific paper. Although other results I produced were also of good quality, their usefulness is mainly limited to data exploration as they're not based upon all data which will eventually be gathered for this research project. Still, Professor Macusi's willing to include me as a co-author to his paper, for which I'm extremely grateful.
Work performed during this Professional Practice lived up to my expectations.
As it was all office work, I got to improve a ton in working with QGIS and R, something which I initially strove for when I chose this topic. I didn't really mind doing office work, and this Practice thus showed me a career in such a position is suited for me. Additionally, I got to improve in various ways as a person during the Practice, examples of which include my willingness to communicate, my creativity and my overall degree of confidence.
For having allowed me this development, I'm glad I got to do the Professional Practice and am generally satisfied with the experience.
Despite me being satisfied with the overall Professional Practice experience, there's two ways I believe it could've been better, which I'll quickly discuss.
The first of these ways is quite obvious, namely if the Practice took place on-site.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was unable to go to the Philippines during my Practice. This led to all field work being impossible, preventing me from improving in various important skills. Additionally, it led to communication being more difficult, as all had to take place online and we had to account for a time-zone difference of six hours. In this way, work was slowed down overall, and I believe I made less progress than I would've otherwise. Furthermore, the pandemic prevented me from having a truly memorable experience and from developing relationships with my colleagues and mentor on a more personal level.
Although my practice would've undoubtedly been better if it had been on-site, this remark can't (and shouldn't) be taken as constructive feedback by the people at IMBRSea or DOrSU, as this aspect wasn't in anyone's hands.
The second main way this Professional Practice experience could've been better is if communication between my mentor and me proceeded more smoothly. As explained previously, insufficient communication primarily led to work proceeding more slowly than expected and to myself developing less new skills overall.
Although this, for a large part, was caused by the pandemic, it was also due to the busy schedule of my mentor. Despite me hardly being able to blame him for this (especially considering he likely wasn't prepared to do all communication online), I still believe it's a valid way this Practice could've been better, and therefore decided to mention it here.
To conclude, I'd like to again mention my extreme gratitude to all the people at IMBRSea and DOrSU, and especially to Professor Macusi, for having allowed me to partake in this Professional Practice.
Additionally, I'm thankful to you for having read my website up to this point. I truly hope I managed to clearly present my Professional Practice experience to you (albeit with a few too many details) and that you also got to learn about fishing activities in the Davao Gulf.
If you're interested to find out more still, or if you have any questions: Please read the scientific article by Professor Edison Macusi, which I believe will be published somewhere next year or the year thereafter.
