To test whether the BRUVS cameras were able to measure marine fauna accurately, different objects outside of UNIVPM’s laboratory of zoology were filmed. These consisted of a plastic container used for samples, a shark soft toy and a large luggage bag with wheels. Care was taken to move these objects slowly and at different distances from the cameras so that the extracted frames would not be blurred.
With the help of a colleague, the BRUVS and diving equipment was transported to a nearby pool in Passetto, Ancona. A large checkerboard was filmed over the course of twenty minutes and at different distances from the cameras.
A tape measure was set on the pool floor and the checkerboard was slowly tilted forwards, backwards and side to side. Due to the floating properties of the checkerboard, zip ties were used to attach 1 kg dive weights to the back of the board for better manoeuvrability.
