Calcium, ATP, and ROS: A Mitochondrial Love-Hate Triangle
Date: Tue., Nov. 28, 2023
Time: 11:00 - 12:00
Venue: IMB B1 Auditorium
Speaker: Shey-Shing Sheu, Ph.D.
Host: IMB-STPA
Dr. Sheu's lab explores the interplay between the Heart and Energy by studying the integrated mechanisms through which mitochondria control intracellular Ca2+ homeostasis, energy metabolism, and ROS generation. Dr. Sheu got his PhD in biophysics from University of Chicago where he focused on intracellular potassium and sodium ionic activities in cardiac muscle. He is currently the Chair Professor in Cardiovascular Research at Thomas Jefferson University. In his talk, Dr. Sheu will share his research on the sarcoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria (SR-Mito) communications, and how SR-Mito tethering not only controls spatial and temporal aspects of mitochondrial calcium, energetics and redox dynamics, but also mitochondrial health and survival.
12:00-14:00 Lunch with Dr. Sheu
Lunch with seminar speaker, please do sign up at IMB Elevator before Monday, November 27th.
Forum Discussion
Date: Tue., Nov. 28, 2023
Time: 14:00 - 15:00
Venue: IMB 1F Faculty Lounge
Dr. Sheu strongly encourages young scientists to ask questions and participate in post-talk discussions. His enthusiasm and passion in science easily spreads to others. His transition from physics to biology is also a fascinating experience. So STPA invited him to share his academic journey and have personal interactions with young scientists in a Forum in the afternoon following his talk.
Please fill out the following survey for any questions and topics you'd like to discuss with him.
