In basketball, SSG stands for Small-Sided Games.
Instead of standard 5-on-5 play, SSGs break practice down into mini-games involving fewer players—such as 1-on-1, 2-2, 3-on-3, or asymmetrical setups like 4-on-3.
If you walk into one of our practices, you will notice something different right away: instead of traditional 5-on-5 scrimmages or standing in long lines for full-court drills, our athletes spend a huge chunk of practice playing Small-Sided Games (SSGs).
SSGs are mini-games played with fewer players on the floor—such as 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, or 4v3 advantage drills. While traditional 5v5 has its place, modern basketball research shows that Small-Sided Games are by far the fastest way for young players to build real, game-ready basketball IQ.
Why We Use Small-Sided Games
More Touches, Faster Growth: In a standard 5v5 game, a player might only touch the basketball a handful of times. In a 3v3 game, touches, passes, and shots skyrocket by up to 300%, giving every athlete more reps in less time.
Real Decision-Making (No Cone Drills!): Cones don't move or defend. SSGs force players to read live defenders, react to open space, and make quick decisions under pressure—just like in a real game.
Better Spacing & Floor Awareness: With fewer players clogging the court, kids naturally learn how to move without the ball, cut to open gaps, and make smart passes.
Higher Energy & Maximum Fun: Nobody likes standing in a line waiting for their turn. SSGs keep every single player active, engaged, and playing hard from start to finish.
