I received my BA in English literature from Williams College. After graduation, I moved to Vienna, Austria, where I was a Fulbright teaching assistant and a student assistant at the Institute of European Studies and learned German in what I like to call "the School of Inebriation". I then earned an MA in German from the University of Vermont concurrently with a Master of Studies, with distinction, from the University of Oxford. I completed my DPhil in Austrian literature at Oxford in 2001.
After returning to the US in the early 2000's, I taught for a year at St Paul’s School in Concord, NH before moving to Vermont to be with my now-husband. For a decade we co-owned and co-managed a boutique web design company and a family property management company.
In 2011 I went back to my academic roots and began teaching at Champlain College as an adjunct, assistant, and then finally associate professor of Interdisciplinary Studies.
As a part-time faculty member, I was one of the organizers of the adjunct faculty union; as a full-time faculty member, I served as President of the college’s AAUP advocacy chapter, a faculty senate officer, and chair of the Faculty Senate Academic Affairs and Welfare Committees.
Many academics do research as part of their day job and have an entrepreneurial "side hustle". In 2022 I decided to flip that - I quit my job in academia to become a full-time cannabis entrepreneur, but I still do independent research on the side. You can see some of my current and past research and political writing on this website.
2022 was also the year that I learned that my father's family is from the South, not the North as I'd always believed -- and that my family was among the perpetrators of our country's long and shameful history of slave-holding. As part of my quest to understand this part of my past, I joined the Kentucky Genealogical Society, where I have met truly lovely people also engaged in various searches for understanding. I joined the board of the Society in 2024 and am currently its Vice President. I also write the quarterly newsletter for the Pannebakker Family Association (well, my research sometimes goes so deep that it's more like a trimester or biannual newsletter).
My current professional work involves my learning as much as I can about AI, a new area for us all. I've taken up "vibe coding" and am also thinking about the implementation of AI in small businesses.
When not nerding out, I run, ski, and bike a lot and try to show up to as many protests as I can. My degree in Austrian Studies has never felt as relevant as it does right now - that, plus my wish to be part of bending the arc of this country's history toward justice, make political engagement feel imperative.
