Abstract
Africa has the world’s highest share of its population working in agriculture and the largest reserves of arable land, yet its food security is increasingly strained by short-term weather volatility and the long-term pressures of climate change. Unlocking the continent’s agricultural potential and safeguarding the natural environments that sustain it will require new tools for both boosting productivity and monitoring ecosystems at scale. This talk explores a collaborative approach that combines state-of-the-art robots, models, and agents to advance African agriculture while also enabling richer monitoring of the natural environment.
Bio
Dr. Paul Amayo is a lecturer and researcher in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He is the PI in the African Robotics Unit. His research focuses on computer vision, robotics, spatial intelligence, and AI for agriculture. He develops embodied AI systems that support sustainable agriculture through scene reconstruction, intelligent navigation, and human-robot collaboration.
