Cocoa Biotechnology
Cosmetics
Cocoa is used in a lot of cosmetic products to add fragrance and flavour to skincare products such as lotions, balms, bath preparations, shampoo and conditioners. Its high levels of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants make it an excelent ingredient to use in body and face cleansers and masks as it softens and detox your skin.
Pharmaceutical Use
In the pharmaceutical industry, cocoa is used for infectious intestinal diseases and diarrhea, asthma, bronchitis, and lung congestion. The sees coat is used for liver, bladder, and kidney ailments; which is also used to control diabetes. It is also known to have heart health benefits, especially dark chocolate, as its bioactive compounds called flavanols have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Recent studies have shown that these properties help improve blood flow and lower blood pressure, therefore improving heart health.
Plant Regeneration
In recent years, there have been further research and studies conducted on in vitro embryogenesis or somatic embryogenesis (SE), which allows rapid clonal propagation of true-to-type plants (plants genetically identical to their female parent). The goal with this research is to find ways to improve the SE methodology in order to increase yield and reduce somaclonal variation. Not doing so can create a serious problem in any micropropagation program, affecting true-to-type plants. This is important since reducing these negative effects on tru-to-type plant materials help maintain biodiversity and ecosystems.
