Our Journey

Spring 2020

We created a program to train our volunteers and also developed a curriculum for the students, focusing on the M-check strategy for bike repairs and also consulted CU Safe Routes to School on a Safety Curriculum. Additionally, we worked on initial repairs on the bikes and painted them to create a better sense of community amongst the program students and also raise awareness for our cause.

After preparing for several semesters, we finally launched our pilot program in mid-March. Our first class was successfully held at the Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club. However, due to the sudden outbreak of COVID, we had to halt the program for safety reasons. During this time we are continuing our research on the expansion of the program through community outreach.

Spring 2019

Our team saw the positive impact a bike could bring to an individual who needed reliable transportation to and from job and educational responsibilities, and this further strengthened our determination to establish our project in our local community. We also saw the mobility challenge posed upon low-income neighborhoods and how we could bring the used bikes to those in need of a bike through an educational program, hosting our first Pop-up Bike Repair Workshop at Champaign Public Library Teen Lounge in collaboration with Baker's Bikes.

Fall 2019

Circle Cycle continued to secure inputs for its first pilot program through conversations with community partners. We also started our search for general and technical volunteers through our connections with the college community. We established a partnership with Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club, and we are now set to launch our first pilot program in March 2020 in collaboration with DMBGC. The pilot program will receive additional support from the Bike Project and C-U Safe Routes to School as well as support from many individuals who are passionate about bike repair and youth education.

Spring 2018

Circle Cycle was started as a capstone project by three new members at Illinois Enactus. The initial goal of the project was aimed at tackling the massive bike waste generated by the Champaign-Urbana college community.

Illinois Enactus is a student-run social entrepreneurship organization. We have 9 different projects that aim to address an ongoing social or environmental issue. You can learn more about Illinois Enactus by visiting www.illinoisenactus.com.

Fall 2018

Circle Cycle shifted focus to creating an Earn-a-Bike program with local middle schoolers and high schoolers. The program would allow each student to fix up a used bike and take the bike home. Our team started having conversations with different community partners to see who would be interested in helping us carry out the program. In addition, the project won a $10,000 grant from the Ford Mobility Challenge at Enactus World Cup.
