Q: What is a tutor?
A: A tutor is a person who can meet with you to help you practice English.
Q: Who are the tutors at ILI?
A: Some tutors are college students that live in the Northampton area, some tutors are retired individuals, and some tutors are people who work part-time or full-time jobs. All of the tutors are volunteers, which mean they are not paid for their time. They all want to help you with your English.
Q: What can a tutor help me with?
A: You can ask your tutor to help you with anything related to English. Your tutor can help with conversation practice, reading, writing, and pronunciation. Your tutor also knows about living in Massachusetts, and can help answer questions about the community.
Q: When can I meet with a tutor?
A: It depends. You and your tutor figure out the best day and time to meet.
Q: Where do I meet with a tutor?
A: You can meet with your tutor in-person or online. In-person tutoring sessions can take place at ILI, a library, a book store, a coffee shop, at a park. It is up to you and the tutor to decide on a public (neutral) place to meet. Tutoring sessions do not take place in your home or the tutor's home. Online tutoring sessions take place over Zoom.
Q: What if I need to cancel a tutoring session?
A: If you need to cancel, please give your tutor as much notice as possible. It is best to give them 24 hours notice if you need to cancel so that they can make other plans. If you have an emergency and can't give 24 hours notice, contact your tutor as soon as possible to let them know.
Q: I have more questions about tutors. Who can I talk to?
A: You can talk to Jeanne Barron or you can talk to your teacher. Jeanne's email address is jeanne@ili.edu, or you can text/call 413-239-7626.
