Writing in the first year of school will primarily focus on building the skills needed to record letters and words alongside the mechanics of holding a pencil and forming letters correctly. Children will learn to generate ideas in response to a prompt and record their responses on paper. As a child's phonemic awareness develops, their writing will become more complex. We welcome whānau to come and see their child's writing books to view their progress.
Handwriting is a key aspect of our writing programme at Ilam School. Students will recieve targeted handwriting sessions that teach the correct formation of letters. Our Junior School uses the "Casey the Caterpillar" handwriting programme to support letter formation. Children learn a series of shapes, such as the "tall stick," "short stick," and "tunnel,"—which they then use to build letters correctly. This approach helps the tamariki to develop proper handwriting techniques.
