Welcome to the Semiconductor Materials for Tandem Solar Cells and Applied Research (STAR) Lab at IIT Tirupati. Our research group explores the fascinating world of organic, inorganic and hybrid semiconductors, focusing on halide perovskite solar cells, LEDs, and memory devices. We are dedicated to designing and synthesizing novel, low-cost semiconductor charge transport layers and integrating them into high-performance optoelectronic devices (more specifically perovskite and silicon-perovskite tandem solar cells). 

Our work spans two primary semiconductor material systems: 

1. Crystalline hybrid halide perovskites (both lead-based and lead-free)

2. Organic semiconductors 

Since the pioneering discovery of perovskite photovoltaics by Prof. Tsutomu Miyasaka (PhD supervisor of Dr. Ashish Kulkarni), these materials have continued to astonish researchers with their unique optoelectronic properties, including defect tolerance, high absorption coefficient, bandgap tuneability, high carrier mobility and ambipolar charge mobility. Meanwhile, organic semiconductors, despite being studied for over two decades, still reveal new insights into photo-physics and charge transport, challenging traditional notions of molecular disorder. 

At STAR Lab, we specialize in the synthesizing novel organic semiconductor charge transport layers, high-quality device fabrication and characterization of perovskite and organic solar cells, LEDs, and memory devices. Through innovative material design and advanced processing techniques, we aim to push the boundaries of next-generation optoelectronic technologies.
