The SHIFT-Lab, led by Lokesh Kumar Kalahasthi at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Tirupati, focuses on advancing freight transportation research with an emphasis on a system-level, data-driven, multi-disciplinary approach. Key areas include freight transport planning, demand modeling, e-commerce, integration of freight with public transit, efficient freight systems, including the use of alternative fuels, automation, and mode choice. The research output equips policymakers with tools (e.g., software, mathematical models) that assist in making the best possible decisions on strategies promoting efficient transport systems.
The SHIFT-Lab brings unique perspectives to solving complex real-world problems by incorporating best practices from multiple disciplines, including transportation planning, network flow analysis, statistics, machine learning modelling, and optimization. The SHIFT team is actively involved in several research projects in collaboration with national and international entities.
