About IIT Tirupati:
Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati (IIT Tirupati) is incorporated under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 and has its campus at Yerpedu-Venkatagiri Road, Yerpedu Post, Tirupati District, Andhra Pradesh-517619. It is the first among the 3rd phase of the Indian Institutes of Technology, announced in 2014, to have its foundation stone laid in March 2015. IIT Tirupati started functioning with the support of its mentoring institute, IIT Madras, from the academic year 2015-16. IIT Tirupati currently offers B.Tech, M.Tech, M.Sc, MPP, M.S.(Research) and Ph.D programs. IIT Tirupati has nine departments viz. Civil & Environmental Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mathematics & Statistics, Physics, Chemistry and Humanities & Social Sciences. The pedagogy is aimed at nurturing innovation, creativity, quality, teamwork, communication skills, ethics, and societal interaction.
Department Profile:
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics, being one of the seminal Departments of IIT Tirupati, offers various courses to strengthen the analytical faculty of the budding engineers and researchers. Currently, the department has ten full-time faculty members and one visiting professor. The major areas of research include Automorphic Representations, Dynamical Systems, Ergodic Theory, Fixed Point Theory, Fractals, Inverse Problems, Numerical Analysis, Partial Differential Equations, Representation Theory of Lie Algebras, Linear and non-linear Time Series Analysis, Financial time series, Modeling of Stochastic Volatility, Analysis of Repairable systems, Chaotic time series, Generalized Linear Models, Machine Learning, Multivariate statistics, Statistics and Probability.
Objectives of the School:
Functional Analysis has many applications in Science and Engineering. For example, it has applications to Partial Differential Equations, Convex Analysis, Fixed Point Theory and Optimization. Hence a basic knowledge of Functional Analysis is essential for research in many branches of Mathematics. The aim of this program is to provide in-depth knowledge of functional analysis and its applications to teachers and young research scholars. Further, we aim to discuss the geometric properties of norms like strict convexity, uniform convexity, and k-uniform convexity and their dual properties and applications of these concepts to the fixed point theory of non-expansive mappings and to approximation theory.
Topics to be covered:
Normed Linear Spaces, Hahn-Banach Theorems, Continuous Linear Transformations, Uniform Boundedness Principle, Open Mapping Theorem, Closed Graph Theorem, Dual Spaces, Hilbert Spaces, Complete Orthonormal Bases, Parseval’s Identity, Reisz Representation Theorem, Weak topology on Banach spaces, Weak* topologies on Dual spaces, Strict convexity, Uniform convexity, k-Uniform convexity and their dual properties, Normal structure, Kirk fixed point theorem for nonexpansive mappings, Applications of geometric properties of norms to the fixed point theory, Proximinal sets, Chebyshev sets, examples of proximinal sets, proximinality in Banach spaces.
Eligibility for Participation: Applications are invited from M.Sc students, Research Scholars working in functional analysis and related research areas, and Lecturers in Mathematics who have passed NET/SET or equivalent examinations.
