Brief Bio: Dr. (Mrs) Suman Kumari Mishra., is currently an Adjunct Professor at Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Ropar. She was Director, CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CGCRI) Kolkata since Jan 2021-July 2024. Prior to that, she was Chief Scientist and served 25 years at different levels of Scientist at CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory Jamshedpur. She has also served as Director of CSIR-Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI), Durgapur, as an additional Charge for 11 months (15th March 2022 to 8th February 2023) and CSIR-IICB for 1.5 month.
Dr. Mishra did her Ph.D. in Materials Science at IIT Kharagpur and is a gold medalist in her Master's Degree in Physics at Ranchi University.
Dr. (Mrs) Suman Kumari Mishra has contributed very significantly to the understanding of mechanisms and the development of advanced ceramics and their coatings, high-temperature materials & composites hard & tough coatings, and corrosion & wear protection coatings for different industrial applications, Energy materials such as thermoelectric and solar reflector coatings, superconducting materials by different advanced processes such as different PVD processes, hot dip galvanizing simulation, Laser cladding, and SHS process. Besides her basic & applied research, she has carried out projects for leading industries such as Boeing USA, Tata steel, and Aditya Birla S & T group and has joint patents. Two of the technologies have been transferred.
She has an impressive career with 15 patents, more than 223 technical publication with 125 SCI publications, 7 books chapter. Her excellence has fetched several coveted awards including the NASI Fellow, Metallurgist of the Year Award, Vasvik Award, MRSI medal, Raman Fellowship, CSIR Young Scientist in Eng. Sciences and many best paper awards. She has held many leading positions and heads of important divisions and committees of the lab as well at national level different times in her carrier . She has served as Dean and Associate Dean for engineering sciences in ACSIR for 10 years. She has guided 6 Ph..D students and around 40 M.Tech Thesis. She is associate editor of Trans IIM, Springer and also defence journal. She is BOG member of IIIT Ranchi.
As Director CGCRI, she has catalyzed technology transfers, Industrial projects, and strategic projects for the components rather than only material development and has successfully accomplished. Major projects in the area of Sensors and their manufacturing ecosystem for structure health monitoring, high power LASERs, 10 KW Solid Oxide Fuel cell development and deployment/demonstration at HPCL, Waste to Wealth mission projects, Hydrogen generation by Solid oxide Electrolyser in Hydrogen mission, space-grade optical glasses, Glass ceramics armors have been catalyzed and brought to CGCRI. They are progressing successfully at CGCRI. Besides several projects, a few new areas of research have been started. Many Industries are brought in for collaboration and their funded projects such as Tata Steel, Saint-Gobain, Allengers, CUMI, etc. Different Government agency projects were also started which were not much at CGCRI, such as Meity, MOES, ICMR, DBT, textile ministry, and Railways besides different ongoing and newer projects started with DAE, DRDO, and ISRO.
