The Department of Mathematics & Computing is a highly reputed Department which functions with excellence as its motto. It was started in the year 1926 along with other Engineering and Science Departments of the institute and has established itself as a dynamic centre for academic and research activities. In addition to the teaching of courses in Mathematics for B. Tech and M. Tech programmes, the Department offers three programmes, 2 Yr. M. Sc. (Mathematics & Computing), 4 Yr. B. Tech (Mathematics and Computing), and 2 Yr. M. Tech (Data Analytics). The faculties are actively engaged in research in diverse fields such as Analysis, Algebra, Topology, Operations Research, Cryptography, Graph Theory, Solid Mechanics, Fluid Dynamics, and Mathematical Modelling, Celestial Mechanics & Dynamical Astronomy, Advance Data Structures, Machine Learning, Reliability, Sample Surveys, Biostatistics, Bayesian Survival Analysis. At present, there are 32 Faculty members and more than 75 Research Scholars in the department. The Department has a full-fledged computation laboratory to meet the requirements of the M.Sc. students, research scholars and the faculty members.
Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) is a fully residential technical institute having all modern amenities located in the mineral-rich belt of India in the city of Dhanbad, Jharkhand. It was established in 1926 on the lines of the Royal School of Mines, London. It is a technical institute of international acclaim offering a host of programmes like B. Tech, M. Tech, M. Sc., M. Sc. Tech, B.S., M.S. and MBA. It also offers Ph.D. programmes. The institute admits students through IIT-JEE, JAM, and GATE/NET Exam in respective programmes.

Dhanbad, being a major city in the middle of Jharkhand’s coal belt, has a good road network connecting it with all major cities nearby. National Highway 18 and National Highway 19 are the major highways running through it, connecting it with cities like Ranchi (the state capital), Kolkata (the capital of the nearby state of West Bengal), Jamshedpur, Bokaro, etc. There are plenty of buses plying on these roads, connecting these cities. Dhanbad Junction Railway Station, located just 2.8 km from the IIT (ISM) Campus, is the nearest railway station. It is the largest railway station in the state. Taxis are readily available 24/7 to take you from the Railway Station to the campus, where one can also avail online cab services like Ola. Unacquainted visitors are requested to book their railway tickets well in advance, as soon as they are available, to ensure confirmations of their reservations.
