Climate change refers to the long-term alteration of Earth's climate due to human activities, primarily the emission of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. Climate change research has revealed that the Earth's average surface temperature has been steadily increasing, resulting in various environmental impacts like rising sea levels, more frequent extreme weather events, and loss of biodiversity.
Scientists have conducted extensive research on the causes and impacts of climate change, utilizing various methods like climate modeling, remote sensing, and field observations. These studies have enabled researchers to better understand the complex climate system and predict the potential impacts of future climate change scenarios. Additionally, research has also focused on identifying ways to mitigate climate change, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and developing sustainable technologies. Climate change research continues to play a crucial role in shaping global policies and strategies to address this pressing issue.
Given the potentially catastrophic consequences of climate change, it is imperative to tackle this problem on an urgent basis using all the scientific wherewithal available to us. IIT Hyderabad has realized the urgency of this problem and has started an interdisciplinary MTech program on Climate Change. Importantly, researchers at the institute are tackling several problems ranging from carbon sequestration to wastewater management to environmental policy making.
