For enlarging the scientific community and spreading awareness about research in the field of armament technology, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has ventured a program that undertakes and pursue research activities leading to designing and development of necessary defence equipment and systems. This program will enhance the intellectual level, physical infrastructure, and scientific understanding of armaments to encounter the future challenges of defence and national security. For achieving this and harnessing as well as nurturing research talent available in institutions, DRDO collaborates with different academic institutes, universities, R&D organisations and industries under Armament Research Board (ARMREB), a grant-in-aid scheme. Under this scheme, grants are offered for basic and applied research. The funding also supports activities like hosting seminars, conferences, workshops, competitions, and challenging events relevant to DRDO.
The research activities of this program are related to defence, primely, Armaments. Armaments, being a very complex, multi-disciplinary system, involves different areas as ballistics and aerodynamics, metals and metallurgy, mechanical and electronic engineering, optoelectronics and computer techniques, explosives, and pyrotechnics, modeling, simulations and system analysis, etc. To cover the entire spectrum of armament discipline, six research panels have been constituted for effective implementation and execution of various projects leading to develop indigenous systems.
