It is always useful to know what components are available and being sold. Check out Digikey and Mouser periodically and sign up for their marketing emails - the new product notifications they send out are very useful for new learners
Similarly SAMTEC and MOLEX catalogs are a great place to learn about the sheer variety of connectors available.
