Ankit Srivastava

Associate Professor of Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering

Dr Ankit Srivatsava got his B.Tech in Civil Engineering from IIT Gawahati, MS and PhD (advisor: Prof. Francesco Lanza di Scalea) from Structural Engineering from University of California at San Diego. As a Postdoctoral Researcher he worked with Prof. Sia Nemat-Nasser at UCSD. In the year 2013, he Joined Illinois Institute of Technology, where he is currently Associate Professor. His areas of interest are the following: Wave propagation (scattering, inverse problems, phononics, and metamaterials), Quantum Mechanical perspectives in mechanics (operator physics, open systems, hermitian and non-hermitian physics), Local and Nonlocal causality in mechanics (linear and nonlinear), Large scale optimization and inverse problems, Granular physics with application to soft robotics, and Data driven mechanics including the development of PINNs and related algorithms.

PhD Students

Hossein Khodavirdi

PhD candidate, Illinois Institute of Technology

Hossein finished his undergraduate studies in mechanical engineering at Iran University of Science and Technology where he was working on the Acoustic manipulation of active carriers. Hossein joined Wave Lab for his PhD in January 2020 and since then he has been doing research on Causality and passivity in linear systems, Atomistic Green's function method for solving scattering problems, the theory of open systems in mechanical wave problems, and computational methods in wave problems.

Kimya Yadollahpour

PhD student, Illinois Institute of Technology

Kimya completed her undergraduate studies at Iran University of Science and Technology, where she focused on the hydrodynamics of microswimmers. In August 2022, she joined Wave Lab, where her current research interests include PT-symmetric structures, Homogenization theory, and scattering problems in elastic media.

Former Students

Dr. Declan Mulroy

PhD, MAE

Currently at Northrup Grumman

Declan transferred from Oakton Community College to the Illinois Institute of Technology in the spring of 2017 to study Mechanical Engineering. He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 2019. He then joined the Wave Lab and completed his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in May 2023. His research focused on the modeling and control of boundary-constrained granular swarm robots.

Dr. Amir Ashkan Mokhtari

PhD, MAE

Currently at Knowles

Ashkan joined Wavelab as a PhD student in 2017. He had previously earned his MSc in Mechanical Engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology in Tehran, Iran. His research interests included acoustics and wave propagation, non-Hermitian systems, and structural dynamics. After completing his PhD, he joined GE Healthcare as a Lead Systems Engineer. He is currently working as a Senior Electro-Acoustic Engineer at Knowles Corporation.

Dr. Yan Lu

PhD, MAE

Currently at SUS Tech.

Dr. Yan Lu is currently on the faculty of Southern University of Science and Technology in China. His recent research involves several topics, including topologically protected waves, noise and vibration mitigation in aeroengines and gas turbines, and structural integrity under super typhoon. He was the first PhD student to graduate from the group and he worked on a wide ranging set of problems, including computational algorithms, theoretical phononics, and metamaterials. After graduation, he joined Boston University as a postdoctoral associate and worked on topology optimization of phonon topological insulators.

MS, MAE

Currently at Boeing

Esteban Lopez is a former Masters student in Professor Ankit Srivastava's lab. His thesis was on data-driven methods applied to mechanical systems, where he studied numerical causality metrics and how to best apply them to simulated turbulent flows, and how to train a simulated soft-robotic system to navigate obstacle fields in energy-efficient manners using reinforcement learning. He is currently an Advanced Technologist on a team called Advanced Learning and Health Management in Boeing Research and Technology, where he applies data analytic and AI solutions to optimally maintain the health of Boeing's portfolio of aerospace products.

MS, MAE

Currently at FLO EV charging

Qiyuan Zhou currently works at FLO, where he is an application engineer providing guidance as FLO builds out its EV charging network in the US East region. He has previously worked at Gamma Technologies, where he supported automotive OEMs in developing the tools necessary to study NVH issues related to both ICE and EV transmissions and drivelines. During his time at Wavelab, he worked on the JAMoEBA boundary-constrained swarm robot project and helped support simulation-related studies of the system.

ME, MAE

Currently at Astra

Llorenc currently works as the Engineering Analysis Manager at Astra. During his time at Wavelab, he worked flutter suppresion strategies using metamaterials.
