TPTC Facilities

All equipment and facilities at Thermal Processing Technology Center is available to support member sponsored research projects or for use under a fee-for-service scheme.  For access to equipment and user charges, contact Prof. Shaw for additional details (lshaw2@iit.edu).

DMG MORI LASERTEC 30 SLM

Through a strategic partnership with DMG Mori, the MMAE Department and TPTC houses a DMG Mori Lasertec 30 SLM system used for additive manufacturing of metallic materials.  The TPTC will utilize this machine to study:

1) How laser power and velocity affect the resulting microstructure and mechanical performance of additively processed materials.

2) Novel strategies for cost reduction and use of non-traditional powder feedstock

3) Evaluation, assessment and development of novel materials and alloys that are amenable for additive manufacturing

Gleeble 3500 Thermal Mechanical Simulator

The Gleeble 3500 is extensively used to understand the deformation behavior, phase transformation and microstructural response of materials during forming operations and heat treatment.  With the ability to control deformation temperature, strain rate, strain, heating and cooling rate, this system is essential for the development of materials property databases that are used for modeling and optimization of processing routes.

ARL (ThermoFisher) X-Ray Diffractometer

The TPTC Materials Characterization lab houses an ARL XRD for characterization of material structures, phases and crystallographic texture.

Setaram Setsys 17 Thermo-Gravimetric Analyzer/Differential Scanning Calorimeter/Differential Thermal Analyzer

The Setaram TGA/DSC/DTA is widely used for determination and quantification both solid-state transformations and reactions involving melting/solidification.

Servo-hydraulic Test Lab

The TPTC also has access to the servo-hydraulic test lab in the MMAE Department.  The lab suite houses eight MTS servo-hydraulic test frames that can be used to provide a wide range of testing services compliant with ASTM testing standards, including: fatigue testing, high temperature tension/compression, fracture toughness (KIC and J-integral), stress relaxation, and more.  In-house fabrication facilities are available and we have a wide range of fixtures and can perform component or specialized testing as well.  Please contact us for more details.

Thermal Processing Facilities

TPTC facilities for thermal processing of materials include, various muffle and tube furnaces with environmental control.  We can heat treat samples under various atmospheres, including vacuum, inert, reducing or oxidizing gas environments.  For heat treatment under ultra low vacuum, we have a Centorr vacuum furnace capable of reaching temperature in excess of 1700˚C.  The TPTC also has the capability of producing experimental alloy heats using a vacuum arc melter or a small scale vacuum induction melter.

Metals Processing Lab

The TPTC has some unique metals processing facilities that can be used for research and optimization of manufacturing processes.  Metals processing facilities include rolling mills (two high and four high mills), swaging and a full powder metals lab with ball mills, cold and warm presses, sintering furnaces, etc.

Electron Microscropy

The TPTC has access to two scanning electron microscopes in the MMAE Department.  A field emission JEOL-6701F SEM equipped with a Bruker EDS and a JEOL-5900LV equipped with a Oxford Instruments EDS/EBSD. Both analytical instruments are available to support TPTC and external research projects.  For more information, please contact: tin@iit.edu

Optical Microscopy and Metallography Suite

In conjunction with the MMAE Department, the TPTC has access to a full suite of metallographic preparation and characterization facilities.  This includes various sectioning, grinding, polishing, etching facilities, two metallographs for optical microscopy, two Buehler MicroMet micro hardness testers.

Wire EDM

The TPTC houses a wire EDM for precision machining and cutting of difficult to machine materials such as refractory alloys, Ni-alloys, Ti-alloys, tool steels, etc. The wire EDM can also be used to directly fabricate ASTM standard specimens for Gleeble and servo-hydraulic testing.

Battery Fabrication and Testing

We are investigating Li-ion batteries, Na-ion batteries, and all-solid-state batteries. We have developed various material synthesis methods to fabricate high-performance electrode materials such as Si anode, NMC cathodes, NaCrO2 cathode, and TiO2 anode for Li-ion, Na-ion and all-solid-state battery applications.
