Scott Dawson

I am an Assistant Professor in the Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering Department at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Previously I was a postdoctoral scholar in the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories at the California Institute of Technology, working with Professor Beverley McKeon, and I completed my PhD in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University, where I was advised by Professor Clancy Rowley. My research lies at the intersection of fluid mechanics, dynamical systems, control theory, and data science.


In fluid mechanics, and indeed in many other fields, advances in both computational power and experimental techniques mean that researchers now have the ability to generate more data than ever before. In my research, I aim to develop and improve upon algorithms capable of extracting useful dynamic information and models from such datasets, alongside knowledge and insight gained from the known governing equations. My work particularly focuses on modeling, predicting, and controlling turbulent flows and unsteady aerodynamic systems.


Our group's research is currently supported by NSF, AFOSR, and DOE projects.
