In February 2018, he was appointed bowling mentor for the Mumbai Indians, despite the fact that Shane Bond is the team's bowling coach throughout the 2018 IPL season. The Mumbai Indians franchise announced that Malinga would serve as a consultant and be part of the coaching staff for the 2018 IPL season.
In 2022, he became the Rajasthan Royals' fast bowling coach. He also continued to coach the MI Cape Town and MI New York franchises in the SA20.
Subsequently, he was appointed as the bowling coach for Mumbai Indians in 2023 for the 2024 IPL season.
