Bathiya Jayakody was born into a military family to the late Maj. Gen. Nihal Jayakody and Mohini Jayakody. Haling from a talented family of singers, Bathiyas' musical roots trace back to his maternal grandmother, Somi Singhika Basnayake, who was part of the choir at Hillwood College in Kandy. Additionally, Bathiyas' mother was a skilled pianist and piano teacher. Bathiya Jayakodys' journey into music began at the age of seven with the introduction to classical piano. A remarkable musical career was the outcome of Bathiyas' passion displayed throughout school years.
Bathiya began schooling at Holloway Primary School in India. Upon returning to Sri Lanka in 1984, he attended Isipathana College Colombo for 4 years. And subsequently, in 1988, Bathiya enrolled at Ananda College in Colombo. During his schooling career at Ananda College, he held positions of responsibility, such as Deputy Head Prefect in 1995, and earned recognition as a President Scout in 1994. After completing his secondary education, Bathiya pursued higher studies and earned a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Business from Manchester Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom.
During his early musical journey, Bathiya delved into western classical music studies while also immersing himself in various musical activities. Bathiya played the alto saxophone in the Ananda College Senior Brass Band and occasionally filled in for the percussion section. Additionally, he showcased his talent as a pianist with the school's western music society and served as a founding member and lead vocalist of the school band. Bathiyas' musical expertise earned him numerous awards in inter-school competitions, establishing him as a prominent figure in the school's music scene during the mid-90s.
Later on, his musical horizons were expanded by learning music technology with Sri Lankan artist Dilup Gabadamudalige. Bathiya further honed his skills by joining the Marry Anne Singers Colombo, where he studied opera, jazz, and Broadway singing under the guidance of the Mary Anne David School of Vocal Music. During the late 1990s, Bathiya ventured into freelance vocal work, lending his voice to radio jingles and commercials alongside Ranga Dassanayake.
During this period, Bathiya collaborated with Santhush Weeraman on several projects, laying the groundwork for the formation of BNS, the iconic musical duo.
