Food!!!

BY AMIRA and DILETTA

Hi guys !!!

Today I'm here to tell you about an experience, or rather the first of many experiences that Amira and I have had and that we never expected ... We had our first meeting alone with Korean girls, but it didn't end there. .. We discussed a topic that we love .. FOOD !!

But let's go in order ... it was a hot and sultry day .. no just kidding, we will not start from there this time

We were very agitated before the meeting, because we didn't know how many there were and above all how to break the ice ... In the end that part went well, strangely ... We played "ice breakers" games just to feel a little more confident between us and we were surprised ... They portrayed Italy as an ideal city !!

Then the time came; the most awaited moment ... the food

It was a very interesting meeting... We hope to see them again soon !!

We chose two typical dishes to show him, including one defined as the "Korean pizza" which, however, has practically nothing as it is more a mix of vegetables.

The other one that we have chosen that inspires us a lot and surely we would like to taste are some sweets called "hotteok" to explain it easy let's say that they are very famous stuffed pancakes in Korea especially in winter .

The Korean girls did the same with our Italian dishes, showing us pictures with foods they were curious to know ... And if you are expecting a nice typical dish like lasagna, pizza or spaghetti you are wrong ... They also surprised us with this choice.

Well yes, they chose the orecchiette ... You didn't expect it, did you?

We were amazed by this choice just like you, but they made us understand that abroad they do not see us only for pizza or the dishes that feel the most

2021 Foreign Language Education Conference.

The Potential of Future Education through the Window of Foreign Language

Ms. Park Heeyoung and Ms. Vichi Stefania attended the “2021 Foreign Language Education Conference. The Potential of Future Education through the Window of Foreign Language ”organized by Gyeonggi Province Office of Education (Foreign Language Dept.) in South Korea.

This collaboration is part of the KISS project, the twinning project that involves our school and the Goyang Lyceum in South Korea. Students and teachers discussed the different ways of learning English and communicating in this language.

The conference was divided into two parts: the first dedicated to students and the second to teachers.

Korean students coordinated the interventions of students from India, Japan, Armenia and Great Britain.

Instead, the teachers presented the teaching of English in their countries.

Technology and the Internet provide very useful tools for teaching foreign languages: padlet, youtube, meet, qrcode, etc.

However, all the contributions showed that twinning projects and exchanges are strongly motivating factors for the development of communication in the English language and for the knowledge of other peoples and cultures.

Both interventions can be found at the following addresses:

ITALIAN SPORTS: NOT ONLY FOOTBALL

Aerial silk

by Cecilia Cardinaletti e Lucrezia Pittori

The most popular sports in Italy are football, volleyball and basketball, while there is a sport which few people know: aerial silk. A sport which has its origins in the traditional circus. The acrobats perform spectacular stunts hanging from a strong fabric, which is in turn hung from the overhead.

It is based on the development of various evolutions which are carried out in air at several metres from the ground.

The activity requires movements which involve the entire musculature, from the limbs to the trunk, developing strength, elasticity and tonicity.

It also refines the balance and awareness of your body and stimulates imagination and creativity, fundamental for the execution of maneuvres carried out in the air.

There are also several simple and difficult falls, but all the acrobatics are safe as they guarantee the presence of the acrobat both physical and mental.

Dispite the popular belief, tissues are not a discipline reserved only to women, airborne tissues can be practiced by anyone, at any age.

My experience

Hi, my name is Cecilia Cardinaletti, I have been practicing aerial silk for 6 years. I love this sport as it makes me happy and every time I get on the fabrics I feel beautiful emotions.

At the beginning it was not easy because I was very young and I didn’t trust myself very much climbing without harnesses; trust is the first thing, then the love for sport led me to overcome all fears.

Food: How to beat the heat: Samgyetang

Written by Gyumin Kim

What is the name of the hottest day in Korea?

In Korea, the hottest days of summer are named Chobok, Jungbok, and Malbok, respectively. And all of this is called sambok. It is located between mid-July and mid-August.

What kind of food is samgyetang?

In Korea, people eat samgyetang on sambok day to beat the hot weather. Samgyetang is a chicken dish made with glutinous rice, ginseng, jujube, chestnut, and yellow flag in the stomach. During Japanese colonial era, many wealthy families made ginseng powder in baeksuk or chicken soup, which became the origin of samgyetang today.

Health ingredients in samgyetang

Chicken and ginseng, the main ingredients of samgyetang, are representative warm ingredients. Eating cold food frequently during the summer brings warm energy to your tired body.Chicken is also rich in various vitamins and essential amino acids, which help boost immunity, and ginseng also helps relieve symptoms of body weakness and lack of appetite. In addition, samgyetang contains a variety of healthy ingredients.Typical examples include jujube, chestnut and garlic, which are good for insomnia and helps promote blood circulation. Chestnuts are also rich in vitamin C, which is excellent for fatigue recovery and is effective in preventing stomachache and diarrhea. And garlic helps release waste and toxins in the body, which is good for strengthening immunity.

The Science Behind Fictional Movies

Have you ever wondered if the science fiction movies you see obey the laws of science? In this article I will analyze various sci-fi movies and tell whether they are scientifically correct.

Win: Interstellar

The infamous 2014 space movie Interstellar is one of the most iconic and famous sci-fi movies as of today. Christopher Nolan, the director of the film, has done a huge amount of research on astronomical physics during the making of the film. Interstellar’s portrayal of space and time is said to be so accurate that many physicists say it can be used in future textbooks to improve the understanding of physics and make the subject more interesting to learn. There is a scene in the film where the character’s ship approaches a ginormous black hole. In order for the computer graphics for this scene, a real physicist named Kip Thorne did the calculations to depict a theoretically correct black hole. Then a team of experts wrote new CGI rendering software based on these calculations to create the magnificent black hole we now see in the movie.

Fail: The Star Wars franchise

The legendary Star Wars franchise is one of the most popular film franchises around the globe and it probably has the most memorable sound design in the history of cinema. Everyone knows what a blaster sounds like, what a ship's cannon sounds like, and the sound of the iconic lightsaber smashing against each other. It’s hard to even imagine Star Wars without those sounds. However the sound effects you hear in the movies cannot exist in reality. This is because sound waves can’t travel in space. Sound waves travel through the vibrations of particles and the reason we can hear sound is because there is air around us. Air consists of various molecules and it acts as a medium for the sound waves to pass through.

Music: Do you know the traditional music of Korea and Italy?

Have you ever heard about traditional music of Korea and Italy? Today, I will introduce the kind and characteristic of traditional music of Korea and Italy. Let’s start!

First, I will talk about Korean traditional music. Korean traditional music culture, like many other countries, was formed by mutual influences from neighboring countries. In addition, a slightly different music culture was formed depending on the dynasty or social class, and its characteristics vary slightly depending on the region or genre of music.

Most genres of Korean traditional music have rhythm. In order to play the rhythm with a janggu or a drum in traditional music, one must know the characteristics of each musical piece, which must also be understood in which genre they belong to.

Traditional Korean music includes "Jeongga, Folk Song, and Changgeuk." The regular song was enjoyed by aristocrats and they sing sijo, song, and lyrics with a deep long breath. Folk songs are one of the types of Korean vocal music produced by ordinary people, and the original version of the tune is not written in the sheet music. Changgeuk is a theatrical style in which several actors appear, divide roles, and sing pansori. Korean traditional music includes Simcheonga and Arirang. (Words such as progenitor and pansori in the middle may not be understood, but these words are native terms of Korean traditional music.)

Secondly, I will talk about traditional Italian music. Italy has different folk songs depending on the region.

Italy is a country where songs flourish enough to be called the "Country of Songs," giving birth to "Bel Canto," known for its colorful singing. Italians have long been known to enjoy singing with a beautiful voice.

Italy's unique ethnic dance songs include tarantella and saltarello, which also originated in southern Italy. Tarantella is a rapid three-beat song originating from the legend that dancing to relieve the pain when bitten by the poisonous spider Tarantula. Saltarello is also a rapid dance song, resembling Tarantella, and the fourth movement of Mendelssohn's symphony "Italy" is famous for the music composed by cleverly inserting the rhythms of these two dance songs.

Italy says, "Go to Naples and die!!" As such, Naples is a beautiful place. A small bay surrounded by Naples' breakwater is Santa Lucia, a port with a particularly beautiful night view, and the famous song "Santa Lucia" is a boat song that sings about the scenery here. "Funiculi Funicula" is a famous song composed by Luigi Denica to celebrate the opening of the mountain-climbing tram with beautiful scenery in San Charucia in 1880. The rhythm of the accompaniment, which seems to be moving at 6/8 beats, gives a pleasant feeling of hiking. Other folk songs that sang Naples include "Faraway Santa Lucia" and "Goodbye Naples."

Music: Pop songs of memories from that I met through a Netflix movie

written music reviewer: Jimin Kim

-Everyone experiences a strong nostalgia as if they have returned to their youth at least once in an old song that is accidentally played somewhere on TV, radio, or in a movie. The joy is even greater when the music you once listened to is no longer heard at some point, and the familiar melody fades away. This week, Bravo's small screen introduces two movies for seniors who are hungry for a memorable trip to listen to the pop songs of that time. All of the featured works are available on Netflix.

Mamma Mia !

‘Mamma Mia’ is a movie about Sophie who is about to get married and invites her mother’s ex-lover to an island. The songs of the pop group ABBA that resonate throughout the running time such as ‘I Have A Dream’ and ‘Dancing Queen’, as well as the narrative that reminds you of your forgotten first love, present memories of your youth. The three beats harmonize with the beautiful landscapes of Greece, ABBA's timeless masterpieces, and performances by senior Hollywood actors such as Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan. You can find yourself shouting “Mamma Mia!” you surrender to the upbeat rhythm

Yesterday, 2019

The legendary band The Beatles loved all over the world regardless of age or nationality. One day, the Beatles disappear without a trace, and what will happen if everyone doesn't know about the Beatles? What if I was the only person on the planet who remembered the Beatles' masterpieces? The movie 'Yesterday' is a story about an unknown musician, Jack, who has a chance to become a star in a world without the Beatles based on such a whimsical imagination. reconstructed with Jack's voice. It feels different from the original song, but the melodies are still pleasing to both ears. It is truly a film of the Beatles, for the Beatles, by the Beatles.

Music: Famous modern movie, Drama OST of Italy and Korea

Music Reviewer: Juyoung Kim

In order for the audience to be immersed in the movie and drama, there are many factors such as the actor's acting, lighting, and background, but the OST is to find many of them. OST stands for the original soundtrack.

Korean Drama OST vs Italian movie OST

Let's check out Korean OST first. The drama ‘law school’ ended recently. The drama had only four OSTs. But those four song were enough to focus on the drama. this drama was about professors and students dealing with laws and justice and solving cases. Among them, the song I'm going to introduce today is 'We are'.The song gave a mysterious feeling. 'We are' increased drama viewers' immersion. The lyrics of "We are" also contain realistic images of students and professors at law schools who want to find out the truth that no one can believe.

The second is the OST of Italy's 'Life is Beautiful'. The film is about the grim reality of Jewish extermination camps during World War II. I'll introduce two songs, 'Buon Giorno Principessa' and 'La Vita Bella'. The main character said ‘hello Princess’ to his wife. 'Buon Giorno Principessa' is his greeting. 'Buon Giorno Principessa' has an emotional and lyrical melody that gives a calm touch and echo. The main character is optimistic and bright. So the film's main theme song 'La Vita Bella' is as bright and cheerful as its title. The title of this movie is a contradictory expression. The title is life is beautiful, but the main character's life is terrible. Both OSTs also seem to express the bright and dark side.

Philosophy: About the Public Interest

Written by Jinseo Yoon

Have you ever thought about the majority and the minority? Recently, I've been interested in what makes a better society, either by caring for the happiness of the majority or by listening to the opinions of the minority. This curiosity naturally turned into an interest in "utilitarianism."Utilitarianism is an ethical idea that first emerged in England in the 19th century, and its core idea is "the greatest happiness for the greatest number".Philosophers who argued that utilitarianism developed society include Bentham and John Stuart Mill. The central idea of utilitarianism is, as I said before, "the greatest happiness of the greatest number".

What this means is that utilitarianism says that the direction in which our society should develop is the direction in which the absolute majority should be happy.

For example, do you know about the 'train dilemma'?

"People are tied to the railroad that the train will pass through. The railroad is divided into two paths, one on one side and four people on the other side. Is it fair to change and save one and save four, or is it just to leave four dead instead of changing one to save one?" This is the train dilemma. Utilitarianism says that it is right to unconditionally save 4 people and sacrifice 1 person in this situation. The reason is that the "principle of greatest happiness for the greatest number" is broken because the sum of the sufferings of four is greater than the suffering of one person.

Korean fashion in Winter

Winter in Korea is really cold, but most people wear two pieces, coats, and boots. A new coined word, ‘얼죽코 a shortened coat even if frozen to death, was born.

  • There are various types of boots, such as socks heels, middle boots, and long boots, so many people coordinate them with jeans or slacks in addition to dresses and skirts.

It is common to see people wearing simple knits woven in various colors and patterns, and recently there have been many people who coordinate jackets over multi-colored turtle neck

  • In particular, winter is the season of Christmas, so it is fashionable to wear a velvet dress, so-called ‘party look’ or ‘party fashion’ to party.

Taste in Science: After Reading <The Disappearing Spoon>

Written by Seoyeon Jang

It is impossible to discuss Korean food without garlic. Garlic, included in most Korean dishes, is one of the most significant traits of Korean food. Koreans often even heard that they smell like garlic when going abroad. By the way, there is a way to make the smell of garlic follow you besides eating it; Using Tellurium. According to the book <The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements> written by Sam Kean, just a little bit of tellurium on your body will have the smell of garlic stick to it for weeks.

Italy, on the other hand, is also famous for its taste. The country of pizza, pasta, and gelato, loved by people all over the world! Personally, when I went to Italy, the sweet and sour taste of Positano lemon candy and lemon ice cream were the most memorable desserts. In this book, the sour taste is analyzed in the chemical stage as 'what we taste when our taste buds open up and hydrogen ions rush in.'

Just as tellurium smells like garlic, the sourness can also be tricked easily. Our tongue confuses current with a sour taste. The book explains this by showing an experiment from Italian scientist Alessandro Volta, well known for the eponym of ‘volt.’

'Volta had a number of volunteers form a chain and each pinch the tongue of one neighbor. The two end people then put their fingers on battery leads. Instantly, up and down the line, people tasted each other’s fingers as sour.'

Sweetness can also be deceiving. For example, the grey element beryllium tastes just like sugar. However, contrary to its pleasant sweetness, beryllium is toxic. Enrico Fermi, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics, is one of the victims of beryllium. He used beryllium powder in a radioactive uranium experiment, and it made him get pneumonia because he inhaled it a lot without realizing it.

Unlike the beautiful memory of taste in Korean or Italian food, it is obvious that 'taste' is not a good standard in science. As I love eating, this book was interesting for me to analyze the taste from the perspective of atoms. For those who want to explore the taste with scientific understanding, go ahead and read this book!

The Market in Reality from the Movie 'Ode to My Father'

Movie, 'Life is Beautiful'

How Fathers are portrayed in the Korean and Italian films: ‘Ode to My Father (국제시장)’ and ‘Life is Beautiful (La Vita e Bella)’.

Written by Dani Jang

Some say there are a couple of things in common in both Korean and Italian culture. One is people’s crazy love for garlic, and the other is their respect for family value. In both cultures, you strongly associate yourself with your family. Often making a sacrifice for your family is viewed as beautiful act of love.

‘Ode to My Father’ is a movie about a man who survived the Korean War and lived through many historical events. In the movie, the main character, Duksoo played by Hwang Jeongmin, loses his father in the middle of the Korean War. According to his father’s last words, Duksoo does everything he could do to support his entire family. He gives up his education to support his younger brother’s education, he fights in the Vietnam war to make money for his family and he even works in a coal mine in Germany. After all these sacrifices that Duksook makes, he gets old to become a stubborn patriarch. However his love for his family is unchanged.

In the academy winning Italian film, ‘Life is Beautiful’, Guido, played by Roberto Benigni, is a Jewish country man who falls in love with a lady from a rich family. They marry and have a cute son. But their happiness falls apart as the World War II breaks and Guido and his son are taken to a Nazi’s concentration camp. Guido, who loved his young son dearly did not want to scare his little son. He tells his son that the concentration camp was a game where the little boy can be awarded with a tank in the end if he listens to his father and does not cry. Thanks to Guido’s efforts to hide the horrible truth from his son, the little son survives the camp and returns to his mother, not knowing his father has been shot to death.

How the two movies view the fathers are different in their characteristics. In the Italian film, the father is a humorous person who is always very playful. In the Korean film, the father is a serious and quiet person who does not express his love well. The plots are different, but the both movies used real historic events so that cruel war and father’s love can create a drama.

Even though the plots of the two movies are different, it is not hard to find one big common theme: Fathers’ unconditional love and endless sacrifice for their families. Their love and sacrifices are portrayed beautifully throughout the both films. At the end of the movies, you will probably cry because you are familiar with such love and sacrifice as your own fathers have shown to you. I strongly recommend readers to see both movies and see how the languages are different but they spoke the same word: Father’s love for his family.

“Discover South Korea”

Written by Alessandra Altaripa e Diletta Galassi

Today Alessandra and I, will tell you about a very interesting experience regarding Korea. In fact, on October 25, 2021 we participated in the “Discover South Korea” conference where there were many interesting interventions, starting with culture, food and education ... We will focus on this last point.

We found the intervention of Miss Heeyoung Park, who is the Korean representative of our project, the KISS project (Korea-Italy School and Students), very interesting. She talked about how Italy is seen from the point of view of Korean students starting from our project. An international partnership of their school, the Jeohyeon Highschool and ours IIS GALILEO GALILEI lasting 3 years, which began in August 2020. It is interesting the vision that Kyumin and Juwon, two students, have on this project where they told their desire to really know our country, and which stereotypes were really true .. such as: is it true that every Italian drinks espresso? But also to learn about our history, our music, our art and of course our food. Also like them we believe that this project is perfect for making new friends and learning a new language and a new culture.

Another important testimony, this time an Italian testimony in Korea, is the one of Professor Fabio Pezzarini who teaches Italian at the Italian culture institute in Seoul that is opened to everyone. We think is amazing how korean study italian not because they have to, but because they want to; in fact he said that Italian language in Korea doesn't give so much opportunities in jobs, but who studies it, it's because they want to know about our country, about opera and maybe to travel one day. Like the professor said, Italian is not so easy even though it is the 4th studied language in the world, so the Korean students and people that studies it, put a lot of dedication even though there is more focus on the grammar and the writing respect of the speaking that is the most important part to communicate. For this we have a different approach on studying a language, but it was so interesting to know about these things from our point of view.

Last but not least, we wanted to share an advice that Fabio Pezzarini gave for who doesn't live in Korea but want to go there .. must have a visa card to be able to live there ...

Learning Korean today: opportunities and resources of Korean culture. 1/4

Written by Chiariotti Erika & Catani Zoe.

The I.I.S Galilei Institute in Jesi organized a conference "Discover South Korea", broadcast live streaming on the Youtube channel, on October, 25th 2021.

Today we are going to talk about the second guest at the conference which was Miss Imsuk Jung, a professor of Korean Language and Literature at the University for Foreigners of Siena.

Since Miss Jung presented several topics, today’s themes will be: the flag of South Korea, the Hanbok and taekwondo.

The symbolism of the flag derives from the philosophy of eum yang, with the white field which represents peace. The red and blue circle is called Taeguk, the origin of all things in the universe, and holds the two principles in perfect balance: the blue represents the negative aspects, while the red describes the positive ones. The four trigrams represent the seasons.

The Hanbok is the traditional Korean cloth indeed it literally means "Korean clothing".

It is still used in very formal occasions.

Several shops in Seoul rent hanbok not in precious fabrics at low prices with the common features such as bright colors and no pockets

Taekwondo is a Korean form of martial arts, the literal translation is "kicking," "punching," and "the art or way of." It is characterized by punching and kicking techniques, with emphasis on head-height kicks, jumping spinning kicks, and fast kicking techniques.

Since 2000 it has also been introduced to the Olympics.

Some of the information you will find was taken from Professor Franco’s article and some enrichments from wikipedia.

Seoul is the capital of South Korea, its name literally means "the capital".

It is located in the north - west of the country, on the Han River.

Even though it is not rich in raw materials, today South Korea is considered the eleventh world power and the fourth in Asia.

The Chinese hibiscus is a plant native to the Far East, it is also known as Sharon Rose or Mugunghwa .

The hibiscus is the symbol of South Korea, a flower whose resistance and beauty seem to be the related goal of the Korean people’s aspiration for democracy.

Hanoks, as you can see in the photo beside, are traditional Korean houses with sloping roof tiles and inlaid and decorated wood.

The more expensive dwellings are usually placed on raised places, where the air is more breathable.

K-pop, short for Korean popular music, is music from South Korea.

Its origins date back to the late 1800s, when some popular Western songs were rewritten in Korean.

The BTS boy-band is the most famous in the world and has also surpassed the Beatles. To encourage their musical career, the government has created an ad hoc law that exempts them from military service lasting one and a half years.

Blackpink is a South Korean girl group. The group debuted in August 2016 with their single album Square One. Blackpink is the highest-charting female Korean act on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 13 with "Ice Cream", and on the Billboard 200, peaking at number two with The Album, which is also the first-ever album by a Korean girl group to sell more than one million copies.

Korean dramas are television series in the Korean language, made in South Korea.

Those are popular worldwide, often offering subtitles in multiple languages. Some of the most famous dramas have been also broadcast via traditional television channels in other countries. The rise in popularity of Korean dramas has led to a great boost to the fashion line.

Thanks to Korean music and series, learning the Korean language has become easier. This has greatly increased the hiring of workers able to speak Korean. You can get scholarships, participate in language and cultural exchange programs, have holiday-work experience, even participate in projects as cultural ambassadors.

The Italian Institute of Culture in Seoul

Created by: Filippucci Silvia and Halbaoui Amira

On October 25, 2021, the first conference was held with our IIS Galilei school and the Korean Jeohyeon High School to learn more about Korea.

A Korean office for Loccioni

Written by ERIKA BARTOCCIO and CECILIA CARDINALETTI

Dr. Carlo Boschi began collaborating on the creation of a Korean office for Loccioni in 2021. Founded in 1968, Loccioni works a lot with schools and tries to implement projects involving students, from elementary school to University.

The well-being of people is at the heart of the mission of Loccioni, which invests in the fields of environment, energy and transport.

In the last five years the company has worked with more than twenty schools in the Marche region and, as far as the Galilei Institute, the average is of two / three students per year.

In the slides shared by Dr. Boschi you can see the economic overtaking of South Korea against Italy. There are no special restrictions on capital, foreign investors and the creation of an office of Loccioni in South Korea is due to trust in their market and their culture.

Dr Boschi ends his presentation with this recommendation:

"Don’t be shy or afraid, because you shouldn’t be frightened by opportunities like this. Take advantage of your project, as you are the real protagonists."
