EC1213: The evolution of the Earth and life

This is an introductory BSMS course (3 credits) on the Evolution of the Earth and Life, emphasizing the interconnected nature of the processes shaping the Earth and the life it hosts, and how their dynamic interplay has jointly molded both systems through geological time.

EC3194/BI3354: Paleobiology

Offered: 2019-Present

This is an advanced BS-MS course (4 credits) that develops an understanding of the processes governing the formation of the fossil record. The course adopts a quantitative approach to establish patterns inferred from the organismal record through deep time. This is appropriate for both Earth Science and Biology majors.

EC442: Geological field techniques

Semester: Spring

Offered: 2022 - 2024

This is an advanced BSMS course (4 credits) for Earth Science majors that develops skills in field-based investigation of a sedimentary basin. The course covers techniques such as interpretation of depositional environment. Students spend the first two weeks in the field collecting data, then spend the remainder of the semester analyzing and interpreting it.

ECS662: Advanced topics in Paleobiology

Semester: Autumn

Offered: 2020

This advanced course is designed for PhD students, exposing them to modern quantitative methods in paleobiology and expecting them to develop original research questions using available data. It is also open to senior BSMS students who have completed the Paleobiology course.
