The Metamorphic Research group of IISER Kolkata (MetRIK) is aimed at examining the tectono-metamorphic evolution of high-grade metamorphic terranes through exposed mid- to lower crustal rocks. Studying the rocks from outcrop to thin section scale, we try to understand the rock's response to varying pressure-temperature conditions and fluid activity and their thermodynamic control. We use in-situ monazite and zircon geochronology to decipher the time scales of these changes. Moreover, by integrating the field and petrological studies with geochemical and geochronological studies, we try to understand the tectonic control on these changes that form the basis for understanding the crustal evolution.
Ultrahigh-temperature (>900°C; UHT) metamorphic rocks serves as the window into the deep crustal processes that operated in the past and provides opportunity to study how processes evolved over time. In our studies, we combine field-based observations and petrochronology to determine the duration of UHT metamorphism and source of heat in Precambrian collisional orogens. Know more..

The evolution of the continental crust from the Paleoarchean has been punctuated by several episodes of supercontinent assembly and breakup. We study the evolution of Precambrian continental crust of different orogenic belts through multiple supercontinent cycles by integrating field observations, thermodynamic modelling and petrochronology. Formation of new crust occurs through emplacement of mantle derived melts while partial melting of crust is primarily responsible for chemical differentiation. To understand the process of formation and differentiation of continental crust, we work at the interface of igneous and metamorphic petrology using the tools of metamorphic petrology, geochemistry, phase equilibria and trace element modelling.
