Giuseppina Carvelli was born in 1911 in Petilia Policastro, from a very humble family and worked as a maid for the noble Madia family. She was a beautiful woman, sweet yet determined. One of the Madia children, Domenico, falls in love with her and the two get married, despite the opposition of his family. In 1943, they have a daughter, Teresa, but their happiness has a tragic epilogue in the summer of 1947, in the woods of Gariglione, where the family was staying in German military tent: Giuseppina leaves her baby, who was asleep, in the tent, to go get some water; suddenly, the tent is on fire and, without hesitation, Giuseppina enters and manages to save the baby, but a further explosion kills both mother and daughter. Of this sad story, only two tombstones are left and the memory of a brave mother and her beautiful baby cherished in a peaceful forest now known as “Mother Giuseppina”.
