GRASPS

For writing summative assessment tasks in MYP units, it is strongly recommended to use the GRASPS model.

It may be beneficial to consider developing tasks as performances of understanding. Performances of understanding allow students to build and demonstrate their understanding in and across subjects. They are based on a philosophy of education in which understanding is not something students have - like a set of facts we possess - but rather something that students do.

There are many performance of understanding models. An example of a performance of understanding format is “GRASPS”. This format is presented in MYP workshops and descriptions can be found online.

The GRASPS model presents students with an actual real-world problem that they can take authentic action on or an example of a real-world problem within the context of a career/industry that they can take simulated action on. This format is an excellent way to frame a performance of understanding in a real-world context.

GRASPS is an abbreviation for: goal, role, audience, situation; product, performance, purpose; standards and criteria for success
