WHY I LOVE IIITNR ?

Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee International Institute of Information Technology Naya Raipur (or IIIT-NR) is an institute which was established in 2015 as a joint venture between Chhattisgarh State Government and NTPC Limited. Since its inception, IIIT-NR has seen exponential growth in every domain, be it academics, research, sports, or any other co-curricular activity.

I joined the institute in 2019 as the fifth batch when the first batch of 2021-25 had just passed out. Our batch had very few statistics to look up to at that time to judge whether IIIT-NR will be a good fit for us or not. I visited the campus before taking admission here to see the facilities and the campus infrastructure, and I fell in love with the campus of IIIT-NR as soon as I took a tour of the entire campus. IIIT-NR has got a lush green campus spread across 25+ acres with all the buildings painted in aesthetic white, sports grounds for sports like cricket and football, canteens, cafe, auditorium and all other basic amenities. Once you enter the main gate of the institute, there’s so much to explore and experience that you will fall in love with IIIT-NR with every new happening here.

Academics and Campus Life

Coming to the part of academics, I want to mention that IIIT-NR follows a fractal academic structure and the students are taught core-engineering subjects from the first semester itself, unlike many other engineering institutions which teach courses taught in class 11th and 12th first and then jump to core engineering. IIIT-NR focuses more on practical implementation than theory and the faculties here believe in “learning-by-doing” attitude, so the students are asked to make projects from the first semester itself which makes it easy to grasp the concepts that are taught in the theory classes. This is one more thing which makes our institute stand out from the others and I love IIIT-NR for having this kind of academic structure. The stress on the theoretical part decreases with each coming semester and the students are tested on Minor and Major projects apart from regular theory examinations. The eighth semester in IIIT-NR is completely dedicated to a Major project of 6 credits in which a student has to pursue an internship for 6 months or perform a research project under the guidance of a professor. Also, the introduction of the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence branch from our batch made IIIT-NR the first institute in India to offer specialization in this field for a B.Tech degree.

Apart from the academics, the other things to love at IIIT-NR include the campus culture and the dynamic college life which is filled with competitions and events spread throughout the academic sessions. There are two major student-operated bodies, namely the Student Activity Center (SAC) and Entrepreneurship Cell (E-Cell) which ensure that the college life of students here doesn’t get boring. The Student Activity Center comprises all the clubs of the institute, divided into categories of Technical, Cultural and Sports and the Entrepreneurship Cell aims at developing the culture of entrepreneurship in the campus, which becomes important for students who want to pursue something more than just jobs in technical fields. All the clubs and the student bodies conduct events throughout the academic sessions with some of the annual events being Technovate, Entrepreneurship Summit, Aarambh, Hack-a-sol, Aagaaz, and MUN conferences, to name a few. Technovate is the annual techno-cultural fest of the college, which comprises various competitions and artists who come and perform in the pro-nites of the event. The Entrepreneurship Summit is the annual event initiated by the E-Cell to promote activities related to fields of business, finance and the topics in and around the broad umbrella of entrepreneurship. Hack-a-sol is the national-level coding hackathon conducted for students across the country. Aarambh is the annual sports fest conducted in the institute and the Aagaaz is the annual inter-college cricket tournament conducted by the sports committee. This blog is incomplete without the mention of the seniors we have got here in the institute. As first year students in 2021, we got to have interactions with all the three senior batches present at that time in the campus. The seniors have been very supportive throughout our college journey till now because they have seen the institute when it was nothing to grow and become what it is today, and they know what all difficulties are going to come in our way. The seniors have always been very easy to reach out to, even at late hours of the day, they have always treated us with kindness and made us feel at home whenever there are any sessions or events going on. This is a great trait to look for in any institute, and this is the best thing which I love about IIIT-NR. 

​Finally, to sum up everything which I discussed above, we can say that IIIT-NR is a great and lovely institute which has shown immense growth since its inception. The culture in the campus has been established  fundamentally well and kept intact with the new batches joining the institute every year. The academic structure has been designed such that the students learn and also have hands-on experience with the projects, still keeping time for the co-curricular activities.
