I am a PhD Candidate in the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at IIIT-Delhi, India, working with Prof. Pushpendra Singh as part of the Mélange Lab. I am on the job market for the academic year 2025, actively seeking postdoctoral positions in academia or industry.
My research lies at the intersection of Crisis Informatics and Critical Computing, focusing on the complex and multifaceted impacts of prolonged conflicts on human development. My dissertation investigates how people interact with information technologies in regions experiencing protracted socio-political disruptions. While disruptive events can vary in duration and intensity, my work specifically examines the long-standing socio-political conflict in Kashmir, India—an area grappling with over three decades of unrest. I explore how this ongoing conflict affects critical aspects of human development, including education, employment, and mental health, and seek to understand how technology is used and adapted in these challenging contexts.
Guided by questions of inclusivity and resilience, my work rethinks the design of technological solutions for marginalized and conflict-affected communities. Using ethnographic fieldwork and participatory design methods, I study how individuals, communities, and infrastructures in Kashmir leverage Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to cope with disruptions and foster resilience. I am particularly interested in how ecological and infrastructural repairs are made during periods of instability to support everyday life. My work aims to design socio-technical solutions that support just futures and promote social and economic sustainability in conflict-affected regions, employing human-centered computing and science and technology studies approaches.
Before joining IIITD, I received my Bachelor's in Computer Science & Engineering from IUST, Awantipora, Jammu & Kashmir.
I am always happy to connect with others about research and practice in technology. If you'd like to discuss my work or collaborate, feel free to contact me at asraw (at) iiitd (dot) ac (dot) in.
