I am a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Computer Science at Carleton University, Canada, where I work with Prof. Sonia Chiasson in the CHORUS Lab. My research lies at the intersection of Human–Computer Interaction, usable privacy and security, AI, and critical computing, with a particular focus on how digital systems are experienced by vulnerable and marginalized communities, including immigrants and refugees.
My current work examines how people navigate digital risks, online harms, and privacy challenges in increasingly AI-mediated environments. I am especially interested in how security and safety technologies can be designed to better reflect the lived realities of communities who encounter structural barriers to access, trust, and participation in digital systems. Using qualitative and participatory research methods, I investigate how individuals interpret, negotiate, and adapt technological systems within contexts shaped by migration, inequality, and uncertainty.
My earlier research examined how people engage with information and communication technologies (ICTs) in regions experiencing protracted socio-political disruption, with a focus on Kashmir, India. This work explored how long-term instability shapes access to education, employment, and mental health support, and how communities develop everyday infrastructural repair practices and resilience strategies to sustain continuity under constraint. Building on this foundation, my current research extends toward designing inclusive, privacy-aware, and socially responsive AI systems for communities often overlooked in mainstream technology development.
I completed my PhD in Computer Science and Engineering at IIIT-Delhi as part of the Mélange Lab, advised by Prof. Pushpendra Singh, and received my Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering from IUST Awantipora, Jammu and Kashmir.
I am always happy to connect with people working at the intersections of privacy, security, AI, and inclusive technology design. Feel free to reach out if you would like to discuss research or collaboration opportunities.
