I am happy to announce that our team (named as UniTeam) has won the HomeRobot OVMM Challenge 2023, at NeurIPS2023, Dec10-16, New Orleans, USA.
I am Prof G.C. Nandi (Gora Chand Nandi), currently serving as the senior-most Professor (HAG) and Advisor at the esteemed Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad. I have had the privilege of assuming the role of Director, which is equivalent to the President of a US university or the Vice-Chancellor of a UK university, at two crucial junctures in the institute's history: from January 2014 to April 2014, and from July 2016 to May 2017, during significant transitional phases.
As a teacher and researcher in the specialized domains of Machine Learning, Generative AI, and Large Language Models (LLMs), my primary goal is to inspire students to embrace creativity and develop the skills necessary for lifelong learning. In today’s fast-evolving professional landscape, shaped by rapid advancements in Artificial Intelligence, it is essential to prepare learners to adapt, innovate, and lead. Engaging with talented young minds is one of the most gratifying aspects of my work.
Over the past three decades, my academic and research interests have centered on Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. Witnessing their transformative impact on society has been both inspiring and rewarding. These technologies hold immense potential to reshape industries and significantly enhance quality of life.
At IIIT-Allahabad, I recently introduced a senior-level elective course on Generative AI and LLMs, designed for undergraduate and postgraduate students, including research scholars. I also regularly teach core subjects such as Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Robotics, with a continued commitment to fostering curiosity, innovation, and excellence in these cutting-edge fields.
At the institute, I have spearheaded the development of the Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (RAIL), which is widely regarded as one of the leading facilities of its kind in the country. Since 2019, the RAIL has been upgraded and designated as the Center for Intelligent Robotics. My vision is to see a future where smart robots coexist with us in our homes, providing companionship, assisting the elderly, performing mundane household tasks, and even sharing emotions. Furthermore, these robots will play a vital role in supporting skilled workers in factory and manufacturing environments through the Collaborative Robotics (Cobotics) framework. To make this dream a reality, we conduct extensive research in these areas.
One of our noteworthy technological achievements is the development of AMAL (Adaptive Modular Active Leg), an artificial limb controlled by a Biologically Inspired CPG (Central Pattern Generator). AMAL offers maximum comfort to amputees at a minimal cost (approximately US $500 as of October 2022). For a detailed understanding of AMAL's underlying technology,
I invite you to explore it further at here-1 , here-2 and here-3.
I collaborate with a diverse team consisting of undergraduate students, master's students, and Ph.D. scholars, primarily in the field of Machine Learning, with a special emphasis on Deep Learning and its applications in Collaborative Robotics. Our research focuses on areas such as multimodal human-robot interactions utilizing speech, gesture, and emotion, as well as intelligent robot grasping.
